RE: iPad for Architects
Contributed by: Ricardo Ramos, Assoc. AIA

An iPad2 is really a major time-saver.  It's no CAD station and certainly not a Laptop, but it does an incredible job of running all sorts of other information in background freeing me up to do my work - but only as long as you use cloud services that is.  There are five quintessential web services that make the iPad2 worth its expense for an architectural practice, without them you just have a really big iPod Touch.  As for the device being too big to be portable, its the same size as my note pad and even fits nicely into my aluminum clip board forms holder (which used to hold my note pad).  As far as it being too small to be functional...well, read on. RE:  iPad Use in an Architectural Practice
Contributed by: Keith Nelson, AIA

I am about four months into a "trial" use of the iPad2 and have found it incredible beneficial as an enclosure consultant working on multiple projects and often out of the office. We now have three and I believe we will be expanded further in the near future. These benefits extend beyond the Apple products and the apps listed below to other tablets and apps, but the iPad2 and the apps listed below my experience as a "non-traditional" architect.  View the entire thread on the PM Discussion Forum.

RE:  Psychiatric Hospitals
Contributed by:  David Collins, FAIA

The ASHE/ICC Ad-hoc Committee on Hospitals is looking for information regarding the definition of Psychiatric Hospitals that distinguish it from a general hospital.  Part of the direction that this committee is moving is to isolate hospitals from other health care types that are now included under the general category of hospitals and nursing homes (I-2).  View the entire thread on the AAH Discussion Forum.

RE:  Accounting Project/Management Software
Contributed by:  David Gast, AIA

[Are there] any financial management/project management software suitable for a ten person firm that you've had success with?  Have you used Ajera by Axium, ArchiOffice with Quickbooks, InFocus by Clearview or other programs?

We are on Deltek Vision after we were forced to upgrade from their Advantage product we used for many years - we felt there'd be an advantage in terms of porting our financial data over easily and in training staff.  View the entire thread on the PM Discussion Forum.

RE: Urban Design for All
Contributed by: Carolyn Krall, AIA

…So maybe we can stop debating 'which' and start considering 'why' and 'where' and 'when' and even 'how' we provide appropriate, functional, high quality environments to better accommodate the full range of lifestyles which make up our communities.  Read her complete message and the entire thread on the RUDC Discussion Forum.
