Who we are

The AIA Project Delivery Knowledge Community (PD) promotes the architect’s leadership role in all project delivery methods by assembling and distributing knowledge and best practices for a variety of project delivery methods, e.g. design-build (DB), integrated project deliveries (IPD), and public-private partnerships (P3).

2020 Project Delivery Symposium: Delivering the Future Agenda

Monday, March 9

12pm - Registration and lunch

1pm – Welcome
Grace Lin, AIA, PD Chair

1pm – Integration through Innovation: Strategies for Improving Project Delivery
  • Phil Bernstein, FAIA, Yale School of Architecture
  • Dennis Shelden, AIA, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Architecture
  • Renée Cheng, FAIA, University of Washington College of Built Environments
  • Nancy Alexander, MBA, Lumenance Consulting

For people in a position to lead and influence change in how projects are delivered, this workshop offers a framework and long-range perspective on the dynamics of the building industry, combined with practical actions to help bring about change at the level of individual projects and the industry as a whole.

Our industry is a loosely bound network of players—designers, builders, suppliers, clients—who organize around projects and then disperse. How can innovation in project delivery diffuse in the resulting network? This workshop will examine three dimensions of this question: innovation (“how can an entire system absorb new ideas and methods, especially when it is traditionally siloed?”), technology (“how can new tools catalyze innovation and new value propositions?”), and finally integration (“how can delivery models contribute to changing culture and behavior, and vice versa?”). Presentations on each dimension will be followed by a facilitated workshop where participants will examine the inhibitors, opportunities, and potential solutions that can lead their firms, projects, and the industry writ large to integrated innovation.

Participants will:

  • Understand the systemic nature of the building industry supply chains and the barriers to innovation in that system.
  • Understand the relationship between disruptive digital technologies and new business opportunities in delivery.
  • Understand ways to attain deep collaboration and true integration in project delivery, rather than just tactical cooperation in fulfillment of contractual obligations.
  • Evaluate inhibitors and synthesize proposed solutions for the design and construction professions and the industry itself for accelerating systemic innovation.
