Codes and standards for a better world

A rigorous AIA study chats a path of change for the AIA

There are thousands of AIA members who generously volunteer untold hours helping to make our profession more relevant, capable, and progressive year after year. Those who serve on the AIA Blue Ribbon Panel on Codes took on one of the profession’s most important and demanding tasks – keeping codes and standards supportive of the needs and aspirations of architects.

In 2018, this amazing group of committed, informed, and enlightened professionals took on a once-in-a-generation challenge, deeply questioning current tenets of codes and standards by asking: “Do they support the practice of architecture in the age of climate change and other 21st century challenges?” Not surprisingly, their answer was “no”.

Their historic work is summarized in Disruption, Evolution, and Change, a magnificently conceived and executed framework for AIA’s strategy to encourage the development of codes and standards. Read it. Digest it. Get active in your AIA chapter to help bring about the profound and essential revolution in practice that is demanded by 21st century challenges and opportunities for architects. At stake is the future of our profession and the clients and communities we serve!

Carl Elefante, FAIA, FAPT, LEED, served as national president of the AIA in 2018, and has been a crucial voice in the "relevance revolution" under way in the profession. As a nationally recognized subject expert, sustainability is the lens through which Carl views all dimensions of architecture. He has recently retired from full-time duties with Quinn Evans after many years as the firm’s director of sustainability.
