Creating a Virtual Integrated Village

The first of the United States' 79 million Baby Boomers turned 65 in 2011, signaling a key demographic shift that will redefine American culture and society for at least the next century. It will also profoundly affect the way we design our neighborhoods and cities. Professor Domer joined AAF in February 2012 for a national forum on Design for Aging. In this article, he reports on the the work of the New Cities Long Life Communities Initiative to develop a conceptual model of a fully integrated virtual and real-time system for a prototype long life community. Read the entire article.

Travel Scholarship to Spain: Due October 4th

The AIA Committee on Design is going to Seville, Spain this November and are offering a scholarship to one Associate. Please view and download the scholarship solicitation online. If you or someone in your office is eligible, please apply or encourage another to do so.

Call for Entries: 2013 Small Project Awards


Submission Deadline: 5PM ET, November 12, 2012
- The Small Project Practitioners Knowledge Community presents the ninth annual Small Project Award Program to recognize the work of small project practitioners and to promote excellence in small project design. This Award Program strives to raise public awareness of the value and design excellence that architects bring to all project types, including renovations and additions, no matter the limits of size and budget. For full eligibility rules, judging criteria, and submission requirements or to submit your project materials, visit the 2012 AIA Small Project Awards Web page.

Public Comment Requested: BIM Digital Practice Documents

The American Institute of Architects has commenced an effort to evaluate the continued development and adoption of BIM and the impact it has on contracts. As part of this effort, AIA is updating its BIM and Digital Practice documents for use on construction projects involving digital data or BIM, and will make the updated documents available for public comment.

Availability
The draft documents will be available for download and open to public comments starting August 15.  The public comment period will close on approximately September 24.  Following the comment period, AIA Contract Documents will begin reviewing user feedback and incorporating suggested changes, where appropriate. Please visit www.aia.org/digitaldocs to download the documents.

Add New AIA KnowledgeNet E-mail to Your Safe Sender List

These notifications will now be sent from DoNotReply@connectedcommunity.org. As is noted on the FAQ, members can control:

  1. Whether others can contact them and
  2. Whether they receive an e-mail notification on the My Privacy Settings page.
