The Forking Path: A City Reimagines Public Safety

10-27-2021 09:13 AM

The path toward the criminal justice system has many forks, each turn leading to different possible futures. Recent calls for justice reform refocus our attention on these moments when paths diverge, and illuminate the role that communities can play in guiding outcomes prior to the need for law enforcement intervention. Are there actionable community policies to intercept and support folks during crises? Can social services proactively offer strength-based community resilience? Can architecture de-stigmatize social services and make them culturally and contextually relevant? Through these, can communities define public safety on their terms, reimagining it as culturally relevant and locally specific? This session will offer you one city’s answer in three voices. An architect, a City policy analyst, and a youth who has experienced both sides of law enforcement will offer examples and architectural case studies to illustrate innovative initiatives underway in Hayward, CA, the 3rd most ethno-racially and linguistically diverse city in America.
