Who we are

The Practice Management Knowledge Community (PMKC) identifies and develops information on the business of architecture for use by the profession to maintain and improve the quality of the professional and business environment.  The PMKC initiates programs, provides content and serves as a resource to other knowledge communities, and acts as experts on AIA Institute programs and policies that pertain to a wide variety of business practices and trends.

There are many reasons to embrace the ideals of sustainability in the operation of our businesses. The three that stand out for me as a business owner are brand identity, efficiency, and resilience. The desire to make the world a better place seems to be a common quality among architects. We make a physical mark on our communities -- whether it’s beautifying a neglected area of the city, creating the healthy environment for children to learn, or developing that most basic human need, housing. Architects, by nature of our training, are accustomed to looking for elegant solutions to unique problems, and many architects are using those skills to make an impact on our communities through volunteerism and pro-bono projects.
