The Academy of Architecture for Justice (AAJ) promotes and fosters the exchange of information and knowledge between members, professional organizations, and the public for high-quality planning, design, and delivery of justice architecture.
With the recent civil unrest and demand for social change, it has become clear our justice system does not provide the same protections for every person. As justice architects, it is our duty to help design and build a justice system that is equitable for all. This session will look to the past to better understand the social movements and changes necessitated by our communities in the present. The history of the justice system and justice building typologies will be analyzed through an equity lens. Programs that are pushing today’s social boundaries will be discussed as precedents for the needed changes. Finally, the panel will present their vision for a more equitable justice system and justice architecture. This panel discussion will bring together the next generation of justice architects and other young professionals to discuss how the justice system and justice facilities may be transformed through equitable design solutions.
