Who we are

The Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) is a Knowledge Community of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). We are a large and active group of over 10,000 architects and allied professionals concerned with the quality and design of all types of educational, cultural, and recreational facilities that promote lifelong learning in safe, welcoming and equitable environments. The CAE’s mission is to foster innovative and collaborative design of educational facilities and to heighten public awareness on the importance of learning environments.

Cultivating Community and Safety in Schools:The Convergence of Education, Mental Health, Security, Justice and Housing

The American Institute of Architects - Committee on Architecture for Education (AIA-CAE) held a virtual Town Hall meeting about our Safe and Welcoming School Initiative. Over the last four years, AIA-CAE engaged experts from around the country to bring diverse perspectives, voices, and experiences to the task of co-creating a community-based approach to Safe and Welcoming Schools by design. The 2022 convening in Portland expanded our initiative to include broad expertise in Health, Housing and Community, Justice, and Interiors to further position safe and welcoming schools within the ecosystem of community resources.
