This presentation is a primer on building science as it relates to the exterior enclosure with particular emphasis on the air barrier. Air barriers play an important role in controlling air flow, preventing moisture infiltration, reducing condensation potential, and maintaining better interior air quality. These factors are important to the health and energy efficiency of any building but are especially important to health care facilities due to their low tolerance for risks associated with moisture and associated organic growth (mold). The presentation will cover information regarding performance and types of air barriers as well as their interaction with thermal, moisture, and vapor retarding layers within the exterior wall assembly. Real world examples will be provided to further convey information and understanding of the learned concepts.

Learning objectives

After participating in this webinar attendees will:

1. Understand performance requirements for air barriers and become familiar with design concepts, material types, performance characteristics, detailing, and installation methods. 2. Gain knowledge related to the various laboratory and field testing procedures available for air barrier materials, assemblies, and buildings. 3. Recognize the importance of the relationship and positioning of the air barrier, moisture barrier, thermal barrier, and vapor retarder within an exterior wall assembly as it relates to vapor drive, condensation issues, air infiltration, and energy efficiency of the envelope. 4. Be equipped to advocate peer review of project specifications and details – enabling modifications to ensure air barrier performance.
