Responsible Owners envisage the long-term impact of ROI on their bottom line and strive to minimize TCO within their business model. Accountable Architects strive to meet the Owner’s project requirements by providing solutions with considerations to "cradle to grave” and TCO assessments. The TCO is a crucial factor in calculating the ROI, for efficiency and for value creation. A TCO strategy is an approach to delivering a sustainable project.

The United States Army is one of the largest landowners in the United States, encompassing 79 installations that cover over 5 million acres. The Biden Administration and the Secretary of Defense recognize climate change as the most serious threat to both military readiness as well as being a good steward of the lands under their care. The goal is to create a digital platform for military installations that integrates and displays site, facility, and utility data from numerous disparate sources. The result is to facilitate climate resilience planning, siting of facilities and infrastructure, and decrease energy and water use to meet new federal climate change mandates and improve the quality of life for military personnel, their families, and civilian employees. The Army Corps of Engineers is creating a digital planning platform (PLANNER) to facilitate siting of buildings and other facilities to be more sustainable, improve climate resilience, and integrate smart technologies to make Army installations "smart cities", as well as encompassing the surrounding communities.

Owners, architects, engineers, constructors, and public policy advocates are demanding that projects incorporate sustainable design and construction practices. Residential and commercial building sectors are responsible for approximately 8 percent of carbon dioxide emissions globally and approximately 40 percent of energy consumption in the United States. Unpacking BIM Sharing Stigmas with Designers and Builders - 1 LU
In 2023, why is sharing a BIM still such a debated issue in project delivery? Certainly, the contractual silos of Design-Bid-Build play a role as compared to Design-Build, but if the efficiencies provide by BIM and VDC are so well documented, why are project teams so reluctant to share models without lengthy disclaimers that amount to nothing more than statements of “you can use it for reference, but you can’t rely any on it?” This session will provide insight from industry professionals about how construction technologies can be merged with project delivery to bridge the gap of the risk management (or avoidance) issues the industry faces, as well as share past challenges and successes of engaging VDC into early project conversations.
