Bio

I'm an architect specializing in green building consulting for architects, contractors, and owners. I've been focused on the very unfocused subject of sustainable design going on 11 years now, with 19 years total in the industry. I founded Ecotype Consulting in 2008, and am managing to keep a small staff of incredibly talented people.

We primarily do LEED consulting for architects (i.e. AIA B214), but I like to think our mission is to facilitate a sustainable design intent with clear objectives and accurate (as possible) projections, translate the design intent into The Design Intent, and shepherd that through the design and construction process. On many of our projects, The Design Intent is based completely on LEED objectives, which is OK. You could do worse. On some of our projects, though, we're pushed to find strategies and objectives not constrained by the LEED reference guide.

We respond well to being pushed, if that's how our clients like it. We can do our share of pulling, too. It's like tandem cycling... captain or stoker, doesn't matter to us, so long as everyone gets there in one piece.

We also work for several really good contractors who need someone to handle the LEED documentation effort without too many distractions for their key staff and subs. These jobs are fun for detail- and results-oriented people, like me. We've developed a good system for keeping track of the details.

Finally, we get to provide research, studies, reports, analyses on a wide variety of sustainable design and development-related subjects: whole building analyses, photovoltaic output calculations, life cycle cost analyses, design and construction standards and guidelines, feasibility studies, you-name-it. These are really engaging and intellectually challenging jobs, and they often have really impressive looking charts and graphs.

We work mostly in Southern California, but we're open to working almost anywhere.
