    Hi everyone.

Are you working on projects that exist to enhance Student Success?  What are some of the key program and design elements to affect a sense of belonging and connection? Are you aware of good examples, articles, or other helpful materials?

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Hi Jason! I actually did a yearlong research fellowship on this topic a few years ago through SCUP. For the study, I worked with close to 300 students at over two dozen institutions to study how physical space can foster belonging + inclusion on campus environments. The paper is here if you are interested: https://www.scup.org/resource/fellows-report-the-planning-and-design-of-diverse-equitable-and-inclusive-campus-environments/
I also worked with students to create a playbook that helps institutions (and architects) better define DEI in the built environment and how to design for and assess it. It's at the very back of the report, but also can be accessed here: https://issuu.com/shannondowling/docs/playbook_final_edited_march_2022

Two additional resources off the top of my head that may prove helpful:
    1. Terrell Strayhorn, who is the Associate Provost at Virginia Union University, has written extensively about the topic of belonging and student success. I highly recommend his book College Students' Sense of Belonging: A Key to Educational Success for All Students
    2. Peter Felton and Leo Lambert, From Elon University, wrote a book titled Relationship-Rich Education: How Human Connections Drive Success in College. I believe you can even download this one as a free pdf. But it's super helpful at connection the dots between human connection, belonging, and student success

Hope that helps! I am quite passionate around this topic and could list off multiple additional resources but don't want to overwhelm the thread. But please reach out if you need anything else or would like to chat!

    Jason -

We have completed several Student Success projects over the last few years.  Each institution operates differently and have a different opinions on what departments should be located in a student success project.  What they all have in common is a synergy around their students making it easier for them to find what they need instead of sending them to multiple buildings all over campus.  Our website has a great example of an old library we converted at Eastern New Mexico University.
