Leveraging the Gap:  Improving Project Delivery Through Off-Site Manufacturing

    Description:

As the demand for skilled labor continues to rise and our existing workforce nears retirement, the need for innovation in our industry becomes increasingly crucial. To address this challenge, off-site manufacturing has emerged as a promising solution to increase productivity while minimizing labor requirements, creating a safer and higher-quality work environment, and ensuring timely project delivery to meet the demands of our clients. However, successful implementation of off-site manufacturing requires strategic planning and careful consideration of timing.

Hosted by the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health an AIA Knowledge Community.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Identify the key factors to consider when utilizing off-site manufacturing and how these can improve staff and patient safety by minimizing disruptions on active campuses.
    • Identify what types of items lend themselves to be manufactured off-site, what has been done before, and how high-quality patient safety can be achieved through repeatable manufacturing process and enhanced product quality, including items such as: restroom pods (healthcare, dormitories, hotels), medical headwalls and footwalls, exterior skin panels, packaged central plants and penthouses, MEP racks, and elevators.
    • Identify how decisions associated with off-site manufacturing influence the end-user and patient experiences and how the repeatable nature of modular construction yields identical components that create a consistent environment for caregivers, which in turn enhances patient safety and improves overall care quality.
    • Identify constraints to off-site manufacturing, including factors such as shipping constraints, timing of decisions- constraint analysis, access and loading into the building, timing of loading the building, and delivery inside the building.
