Last chance to register for Justice Innovations: Shifting the Paradigm - 2023 AAJ Fall Conference
The 2023 AIA AAJ Conference in Washington, D.C. provides an opportunity for architects, engineers, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to examine the evolving landscape of research-based interventions, sentencing alternatives, and architectural responses to traditional correctional settings that exist before, during, and after involvement in the justice system.

Highlighted keynote speakers will consider the following questions:

Honorable Timothy C. Evans, chief judge, Circuit Court of Cook County

    • How can the AIA and the AAJ most effectively help increase restorative justice community courts for Emerging Adults between 18 and 26 charged with non-violent crimes?

Kevin Ring, vice president of Criminal Justice Advocacy, Arnold Ventures

    • How did a tough-on-crime congressional staffer end up managing the largest justice reform advocacy portfolio in the country?

Steven Chanenson, professor of Law, Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law

    • Can the more humane Scandinavian incarceration practices and values work inside a U.S. prison?

Denio Marx Menezes, director for International Relations, APAC; Jackie Aldrette, deputy secretary general for U.S. Government, AVSI-USA; Simonetta D'Italia Wiener, executive director,& director/producer, "Unguarded"

    • How do we rethink our approach to prison? Instead of focusing on the failures of incarcerated individuals, how may we strategize prison design to make them feel worthy, respected, and empowered to restore their lives?

Stefan LoBuglio, principal, Justice Innovations; former chief, Montgomery County Pre-Release Center

    • How do we replicate a pre-release center model where 90% of residents leave with jobs and savings, and nearly 100% with places to live, community and family support?

Highlighted tours and interactive events will reveal justice design and construction success stories:
Montgomery County (Md.) Pre-Release Center Tour
The 144-bed Montgomery County Pre-Release Center (PRC) provides its two detention centers' soon-to-be-released incarcerated adults with evidenced-based transitional services. The PRC also serves state and federal prisoners returning to Montgomery County and the larger Washington, DC metropolitan, area.

Washington DC Consolidated Forensic Laboratory Tour
The Consolidated Forensic Laboratory (CFL) is a cutting-edge, award-winning science facility designed to provide the District of Columbia with critical public safety and health science infrastructure. Working with relevant agencies and stakeholders, HOK's design team developed common protocols to create a universally adaptable research model for the building.

    2023 Justice Facilities Review Luncheon
The Justice Facilities Review documents best practices in planning and design for justice architecture. The JFR offers a range of design strategies, and highlights the latest trends in building design and construction that directly support the justice system. These recipient projects demonstrate quality of form, functionality, and current architectural responses to complex justice design issues.

    Private Screening Movie Night: ''Unguarded''

''Unguarded'' takes us inside the walls of Associação de Proteção e Assistência a Condenados (APAC), the revolutionary Brazilian NGO that provides better conditions to incarcerated individuals through an alternate prison model. It explores APAC's unique rehabilitation methods, which 23 countries have since replicated. Observing the daily lives of the "recuperandos" (recovering inmates) who live and work there, we see firsthand why-as one inmate puts it-''no one escapes from love. ''
