Who we are

The Young Architects Forum (YAF), a program of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the College of Fellows (COF), is organized to address issues of particular importance to recently licensed architects.

FAQ: What is a young architect and what is an emerging professional? Young architects are architects licensed up to ten years of initial licensure, and the name does not have any relationship to age. Emerging professionals are professionals who have completed their academic studies up to the point of licensure or up to 10 years after completion of their academic studies. Although young architects are now defined as distinct from emerging professionals, many components refer to these groups similarly. For example, a local YAF group may include emerging professionals and a local Emerging Professionals Committee may include young architects.

    Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship Opportunities

    The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) has been selected to host a https://hbcui.org/. Click or tap if you trust this link." data-linkindex="8">Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship Program (HBCUI) Summer Architect in 2024. The 10-week PAID, internship will be located in the Heritage Documentation Program (HDP) office in Washington, DC. 
    The Summer 2024 project consists of three components. The production of Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) measured and interpretative drawings of select historic structures associated with the enslaved in Virginia. A short-form HABS historical report on the structures drawn will be written under guidance of a staff historian. The selected student will also assist in teaching HABS documentation methods to students enrolled in a historic preservation field school.

    Initiated by the Washington Support Office, Youth Programs Division, of the National Park Service in 2012, this Historically Black Colleges and University Internship (HBCUI) was created to connect students attending https://hbcuconnect.com/colleges/. Click or tap if you trust this link." data-linkindex="14">Historically Black Colleges and Universities to park units with connections to African American history and culture. Over the years, the program has expanded in its effort to protect natural, historical, and cultural resources in parks as participants gain exposure to career opportunities in public land management.
