All communities need to protect their residents from disasters like fires, weather-related events and structural collapse. Model building codes are society's best way of protecting homes, offices, schools, hospitals, stores, and other critical infrastructure. Building Safety Month (BSM), founded by the International Code Council (ICC), is celebrated by jurisdictions worldwide every May. It’s a month-long celebration of all aspects of building safety that helps families, employers, and leaders understand and appreciate the best practices that keep safe the places where we live, work, and play. As a major sponsor of this event, the AIA is promoting the Week Two theme of “Building Design Solutions for All Ages”. Code officials certainly work day in and day out to keep the public safe, but Building Safety Month depends on the efforts of individuals like you! Architects are uniquely positioned to meet the needs of aging-in-place clients, provided they fully understand the design solutions and products that make living in a home easier.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Learn about Building Safety Month and how to promote it in your community through your state or local component activities.

    2. Identify best practices that communities and the construction industry implement to keep safe the places we live, work, and play.

    3. Appreciate the contributions of building code officials to constructing safe, vibrant, and adaptive communities now and in the future.

    4. Understand how architects are uniquely positioned to meet the needs of aging-in-place clients through design solutions and products that make living in a home easier.
