Complexity and Community, Current Trends in Police Training

By Victor D. Reyna posted 10-16-2015 11:24 AM

The “Complexity and Community, Current Trends in Police Training”, this roundtable will be presented on Thursday, November 19th at the AAJ conference to be held in Miami.

This session will be leaded by a group of profesionals that includes Steve Loomis, Scott Tao who is a Pratt Institute Alumna with approximately eighteen years of experience working in the architectural industry, a Design Award Winner and currently holds a title of Senior Associate at AECOM. Enrique Macia has worked as a justice designer and project manager at CGL RicciGreene since 2012 and prior to that was at AECOM for 26 years, finishing his tenure there as a Justice Principal in charge of the Miami office.

This time i had the opportunity to talk briefly with Enrique and Steve and they told me that this roundtable will discuss the current situation impacting police departments that have recently received much negative press regarding the use of force and in some cases, deadly force. The topics of proper police training and how law enforcement officers engage with the communities they serve through their own specialized training will be discussed. Examples of training others through outreach programs at the police training facilities that have already made real connections between the police and the communities, such as the self-defense training course for women taught at the Fairfax County Police Headquarters in Fairfax, VA will be presented. A second example will include the School for Law Studies, Law Enforcement, Homeland Security and Forensic Sciences which is co-located with the City of Miami’s Police College training complex, project that will be presented and explained during the conference. In this facility the Miami-Dade County School Board and the City of Miami Police Department have joined forces to create a unique one of a kind  facility where the high school students receive a rigorous education while tying their studies to specific career objectives in the law and law enforcement fields.

Our session Leader shared with me these images that shows City of Miami Police College, building that will serve as an example during the conference.

View of the lobby pre-function space for the auditorium, a shared program component used by both the Police department and the magnet high school programs.

Interior view of the shared use auditorium.

View of the shared use gymnasium. This space forms the core of the building on the lower two levels and is used by both the high school and police training groups.

View of the indoor firing range. This space is used exclusively by the police department for training purposes but is physically located underneath some of the high school program areas.

During this session the speakers goals are make the audience members participate by filling out a short survey regarding their perceptions and knowledge of police training given at the beginning of the session with results revealed during Q&A, making the participants able to identify how to successfully integrate building security requirements with open and transparent design concepts, and evaluate the impact of outreach programs.
