Aug 1, Earth Overshoot Day 2024

Earth Overshoot Day is computed by dividing the planet’s biocapacity (the amount of ecological resources Earth is able to generate that year), by humanity’s Ecological Footprint (humanity’s demand for that year), and multiplying by 365, the number of days in a year. Explore Solutions to #MoveTheDate.  Thriving lives within the means of our planet are not out of reach. Plenty of solutions exist in five major areas for improving sustainability: planet, cities, energy, food, and population.

Aug 2, Deadline JAE 79:1 Call for Papers Architecture Beyond Extraction

JAE 79:1 will explore the relationship between extraction and the material culture of architecture: from the scale of the brick to that of the mine; from extractive capitalism to models of care and reciprocity. How are colonialism, labor, and technology implicated in the production of space, form, and inhabitation? How might we go beyond extractive models to consider mutualism and solidarity as critical to the formation of regenerative systems?

Aug 4-9, 2024 Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings

ACEEE’s 2024 Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings will bring professionals from around the globe to the Asilomar Conference Grounds to discuss the technologies, practices, and research urgently needed to equitably decarbonize the buildings sector. We’ll tackle a range of cutting-edge topics related to this year’s theme: “Equity and Climate Action: Time to Deliver.”

Aug 5, 1 pm ET, Resilience, Storage, and Grid Benefits    

Department of Energy (DOE)’s Solar Energy Technology Office. Join Clean Energy Group in exploring best practices, opportunities, and obstacles in advancing resilient power – solar PV paired with battery storage (solar+storage) – in historically marginalized communities... an interactive 2-hour session, will explore household- & community-level resilience, grid strengthening & grid-level resilience, and improved health outcomes through reduced or shortened power outages.

Aug 6, 2 pm ET, Informational Webinar- $36 Million to Deliver Innovative Weatherization to Low-Income Households

DOE has announced that applications are open for the $36 million Enhancement & Innovation (E&I) competitive grant program from the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). This grant aims to expedite the nation’s shift to clean energy through demonstration projects. These projects will not only support low-income homes by making them safer and more comfortable, but they are also an opportunity to explore new weatherization techniques and technologies and showcase best practices that could be adopted across the country. apply by September 27, 2024.

The meeting is free and open to all members of the public. Individual registration for the event is REQUIRED.

Aug 8, 3 pm ET, Application Deadline, Elective Pay - Blueprints for Communities Funding    

The Elective Pay – Blueprints for Communities opportunity was launched in July 2024 to support the development of additional resources for communities as they plan and execute projects which are eligible for clean energy tax credits through Elective Pay or the 179d energy efficient commercial building property tax deduction. A total of $915,000 will be awarded to 3-10 selectees.

Next to Lead is the first program of its kind to support association leadership for ethnically diverse women aspiring to be leaders of the AIA. Aug 14, 12:30 pm ET, DOE BIL, IRA Summer Progress Update

webinar celebrating the tremendous clean energy progress that has been made since the Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law two years ago. Representing the largest investment in clean energy and climate action ever, the Inflation Reduction Act – coupled with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – tasked the DOE with more than $97 billion to renew our nation’s infrastructure, rebuild domestic manufacturing, create millions of good-paying jobs, address climate change, and increase American competitiveness. 

Aug 15, 12 pm ET, DOE Office of Infrastructure to Launch New Mapping Resource for BIL, IRA Investments

co-hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of the Under Secretary for Infrastructure and Blue Green Alliance for the launch of a new mapping resource that highlights the location of selected projects, awarded investments, and associated community benefits made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).  The webinar will also feature DOE’s Office of Community Engagement (OCE) and leaders who will sharing their experiences about working in communities where clean energy infrastructure investments are being deployed.

Aug 15, 1 pm ET, Refrigerants and Codes:

Understanding the Impact of Refrigerants Requirements on Building Codes and Standards on the Path to Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions. DOE Building Energy Codes Program (BECP) Webinar Series. This session will provide an overview of how refrigerants are currently handled in codes and standards, and explore what new changes and approaches could help overcome barriers to adoption of low-GWP refrigerants.

Metropolis‘s annual Planet Positive Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the progress you are making toward design for a regenerative and equitable future. We have a variety of categories for entries—projects that aren’t certified can enter our innovation awards, and we have special recognitions for students and instructors.

Aug 16, Deadline, EPA Equitable Resilience Technical Assistance for Community Change Grants 

EPA is launching a technical assistance program to help eligible entities in disaster prone areas prepare to apply for Community Change Grants to benefit disadvantaged communities. This technical assistance will consist of free design and project development assistance, community engagement, and partnership development workshops.

Aug 20, 1 pm ET, Data Driven Approaches to Planning for Extreme Heat

Zoe Davis, Climate Resiliency Project Manager for the City of Boston Environment Department, will describe the city’s approach to heat resilience solutions and how data is used to inform equitable decision making. Ms. Davis will be joined by Victoria Ludwig, U.S. EPA's Office of Community Revitalization, Ladd Keith, University of Arizona, and Sara Meerow, Arizona State University. Participants of this live webinar are eligible for 1.5 AICP CM credits.

This summer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will update EJScreen, the Agency's publicly available environmental justice (EJ) screening and mapping tool. The updated version, makes important improvements to better meet the needs of users, including new environmental indicators and map layers, interface improvements, and updated demographic and environmental data. Aug 22 1-2 pm ET, Buildings as Sites of Carbon Storage: A Major Decarbonization Opportunity

Greenbuild Webinar.  Can buildings become a major carbon bank for the planet? This webinar explores the potential for buildings to shift from leading climate change contributors to becoming an important part of healing the climate. Efforts to reduce embodied carbon in buildings have largely been focused on reducing the carbon footprint of materials, but there is a growing body of building materials that store more carbon than was emitted in their production. Safely and durably stored in buildings, this carbon removal could quickly become the leading source of carbon dioxide removal on the planet, as well as the most practical and affordable.

Carlos Martín and Claudia Solari, co-authors of a new report about housing resilience in post-Katrina Louisiana, will discuss community-level interventions and their impacts. Katharine Burgess from Smart Growth America will discuss how real estate developers and public sector officials are adapting to more extreme weather conditions nationwide. Join ILFI on August 28th for an insightful member webinar led by experts from Architectural Nexus. Our speakers will introduce their comprehensive equity toolkit designed to empower community engagement in any design project. The toolkit combines elements from ILFI’s LBC Equity Petal, the AIA Framework for Equitable Communities, and SEED certification criteria into a comprehensive, open-source tool designed to help integrate community engagement and equitable thinking during pre-design while formulating project goals. The speakers will present the resource through a discussion of compiled frameworks and case studies. The closing discussion will provide direct feedback for the web-based questionnaire and participant ideas for increasing equity on projects.

Aug 28, Deadline AIA Upjohn Research Initiative Grants –  Submissions

The AIA Upjohn Research Initiative supports applied research projects that enhance the value of design and professional practice knowledge. Academic institutions, firms, practice, and other research and non-profit organizations are all eligible for grants.  Research should be relevant and applicable to practicing architects. Research grant funding will be allocated to projects related to the priorities outlined in AIA’s Strategic Plan and the Framework for Design Excellence. Research projects must address one or more of these areas: zero-carbon, resilient design, equitable communities, health, practice innovation
