The Committee on the Environment (COTE®) is an AIA Knowledge Community working for architects, allied professionals, and the public to achieve climate action and climate justice through design. We believe that design excellence is the foundation of a healthy, sustainable, and equitable future. Our work promotes design strategies that empower all AIA members to realize the best social and environmental outcomes with the clients and the communities they serve.

May 6, AIA Women’s Leadership Summit - Calls for Proposals Opens

The call for proposals will open May 6 and close June 14. Women’s Leadership Summit, October 8-10, 2024, founded by AIA, exists to support and empower women on their leadership journeys and break down the barriers.  This premier event brings together the industry’s largest network of diverse women in architecture, design, and the allied building industries who are moving into leadership roles and manifesting the careers they want—all while making a difference in the world. May 9-10, Leadership Summit on the Future of Environmental Responsibility (New Orleans, LA)

Hosted by Tulane School of Architecture. On any given day, each of us has the choice to approach the dynamics of environmental responsibility with frustrated pessimism or promising resolve. At DesignIntelligence we’re leaning into promising resolve. Regardless of how political winds are blowing or how industries and governments are responding, we choose to remain focused on what matters toward positive environmental outcomes.

May 10, Application Deadline for the Harry Misuriello Award

ACEEE is accepting applications for the Harry Misuriello Award to provide an emerging professional with the opportunity to attend the 2024 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings and present a poster highlighting their work or a topic of interest related to building energy codes. The Summer Study will be held in Pacific Grove, California, August 4–9. The award will cover the costs of registration and on-site room/board and provide a travel stipend.

May 14 – 16, The 6th National Adaptation Forum (Saint Paul, Minnesota)

The National Adaptation Forum is a bi-annual convening for adaptation professionals to innovate, network, and focus on established and emerging climate adaptation issues of the day. The Forum provides opportunities for professional development through training sessions, facilitated presentations and panels, and formal and informal networking sessions.

May 15, 12 pm ET, The Race to Decarbonize: Cities and Transportation

Transportation is the largest contributor of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for about nearly 30 percent in most recent estimates. On Wednesday, May 15 at 12:00 p.m. ET, Ford’s chief sustainability officer Bob Holycross and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego discuss efforts to decarbonize transportation, build out electric vehicle infrastructure and design smarter cities. May 15-17, Climate Change Preparedness Conference & Workshop, (Las Vegas)

The Climate Change Preparedness Conference is dedicated to tackling the challenges confronting communities, coastal regions, and vulnerable populations in the era of climate change. As a vital platform for knowledge exchange, we gather to share best practices and cutting-edge strategies, fostering climate resilience in the face of adversity. May 21, 1-4 pm ET, Navigating Organizational Funding for Home Energy Upgrade Programs in Justice 40 Communities

ACEEE. The federal government is releasing historic amounts of funding to advance home energy upgrades in the United States right now, with many specifically dedicated to delivering energy savings, comfort, and health benefits to Justice 40 communities. Many of these funding opportunities come with difficult applications and complicated requirements due within short timelines. 

May 21-23, Getting to Zero Forum (Charlotte, NC)

Getting to Zero is a movement that is defining the future of the built environment targeting zero energy and carbon neutral performance. The Getting to Zero Forum aims to accelerate action to create an equitable clean energy future for the built environment.

May 22-24 NIBS Building Innovation conference (Washington, DC)

There's no other event that brings together this unique set of individuals – government agencies, contractors, the private sector, architects, scientists and more – to improve the built environment. The conference will cover four topic areas in the built environment with expert-led sessions. Earn AIA LU credits, ICC credits, and certificates of attendance for conference attendance.

May 22-24, Accelerating the Circular Economy (Chicago, IL)

As the leading convening of professionals building the circular economy, Circularity 24 offers thought-provoking keynotes, actionable breakouts, a solutions-oriented expo and unparalleled networking opportunities. Join the growing community of visionaries and practitioners to move beyond incremental action, catalyze systems change and accelerate the circular economy.

May 23, 2:30 pm ET, Cities Leading the Way on Nature-Based Solutions (hybrid)

Briefing series about climate solutions from small- and medium-sized cities, speakers will discuss nature-based solutions in urban settings—from parks that help manage stormwater to urban trees that reduce summer temperatures across entire neighborhoods. Panelists will highlight equitable and community-designed climate solutions from the places they live and work and describe the intersection points with federal policy and programs. RSVP here. May 29, 2 pm ET, 2024 Renew America's Schools Prize – Office hours

The 2024 Renew America’s Schools Prize implements a prize-to-cooperative-agreement funding model to streamline the application process, expedite the award process, and provide winners earlier and more targeted support. Like the 2022 Renew America’s Schools grant, the 2024 Renew America’s Schools Prize will fund energy-efficient and clean energy infrastructure improvements at school districts across America.

May 31, Application deadline - Communities Sparking Investment in Transformative Energy (C-SITE)

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of State and Community Energy Programs launched the new C-SITE program with $18 million in funding now available. C-SITE provides direct funding and comprehensive technical assistance to federally recognized Indian Tribes, disadvantaged and energy communities, and small- to medium-sized jurisdictions to implement municipally- or Tribal-led clean energy projects.

May 31, Application deadline - Home Energy Rebates early administrative funding

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has set a deadline of May 31, 2024, for state and territorial energy offices (SEOs) to apply for Home Energy Rebates early administrative funding. SEOs can use this funding to begin planning their programs. When applying, SEOs are eligible to receive up to 2.5 percent of their total allocations from each Rebates program, capped at $2.5 million per rebate program, or $5 million total. The deadline for SEOs to submit full funding applications to DOE is January 31, 2025
