The Committee on the Environment (COTE®) is an AIA Knowledge Community working for architects, allied professionals, and the public to achieve climate action and climate justice through design. We believe that design excellence is the foundation of a healthy, sustainable, and equitable future. Our work promotes design strategies that empower all AIA members to realize the best social and environmental outcomes with the clients and the communities they serve.

Apr 1, 12 pm ET, How Architects can Make a Difference NOW in Housing and Climate

Associated with AIA Housing and Community Development.  This interactive program explores the ways architects have and continue to make significant progress in meeting housing needs and responding to the climate crisis. The discussion will include sharing successes as well as exploring strategies for overcoming challenges. Examples of architects who have made a difference through practice, policy and scholarship are featured. Resources to support and inform action will be shared. You’ll leave inspired!

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) is establishing an extended training opportunity for faculty to expand the impact of their research and scholarship beyond the academy. ACSA is partnering with The Op-Ed Project and the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism to provide training and guidance on externalization strategies. This opportunity is for architecture faculty, whose research intersects with climate action or climate justice, and is intended to help them impact conversations that affect everyone.

 Apr 3, Deadline Call For Papers: Cityscape Symposium on Extreme Heat in Cities

In 2025, Cityscape intends to publish several articles in a symposium on how to cool cities or mitigate the impacts of extreme heat, especially its impacts on low- and moderate-income workers and residents and socially vulnerable groups. Papers may be from any disciplines but should be intelligible to a multidisciplinary audience. Articles must be original work not published elsewhere. The AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE®), in partnership with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), is pleased to announce the ninth annual AIA COTE® Top Ten for Student Competition. The program challenges students, working individually or in teams, to submit projects that use a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems, and technology to provide architectural solutions that protect and enhance the environment. Architecture Week 2024 is a nationwide celebration recognizing the power of good design, with a goal of inspiring hopeful architecture and design professionals and K-12 students.  Get involved in Architecture Week 2024 by sharing our posts, contributing to a wish list, inviting students to your firm, sending a letter to your local schools or libraries, or actively engaging with students throughout the week.

The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) announced plans to organize a series of back-to-back events as part of a ‘Sustainability Week’. The UNGA President highlighted the importance of thematic debates to ensure high-level attendance and progress related to ‘Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly’ (Resolution 77/335). The events will also contribute to the Summit for the Future.

The world’s leading event for circular economy thinkers, doers and leaders hits Brussels in April 2024, showcasing the most impactful circular solutions from around the world. The SQUARE is already fully booked with in-person participants, but online participation is open to everyone, free of charge.

Apr 16, 11:30 am ET, Making it Pencil: Inflation Reduction Act Tax Credits and Green Multifamily Housing Construction

Co-hosted by the U.S. Green Building Council, Diverse Developers Conference, AIA and ULI.  Join us for a webinar focused on the economics of using the Sec. 45L New Energy Efficient Home Tax Credit and other incentives to make multifamily housing both green and profitable. The webinar will feature a new economic analysis from housing developer Aspire Residential on the costs and benefits of meeting new incentive requirements under the Inflation Reduction Act, followed by “101” presentations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE) on how to meet the ENERGY STAR and Zero Energy Ready Home program requirements for receiving the Sec. 45L credit.

A global stocktaking on sustainable energy, to take place on 19 April 2024 under the auspices of the UN General Assembly, will be a major opportunity to accelerate action and strengthen multi-stakeholder partnerships, towards achieving clean and affordable energy for all -- Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) -- as well as the aims of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon® is a collegiate competition that has inspired thousands of students worldwide to enter the clean energy workforce since its inception in 2002. Today, the 10 contests that are the foundation of Solar Decathlon challenge students to design and build high-performance, low-carbon buildings that mitigate climate change and improve our quality of life through greater affordability, resilience, and energy efficiency.

Apr 22-28, US Climate Action Summit

US Climate Action Summit, will unite leaders, innovators, and advocates to collaborate on critical issues across the climate space, and capitalise on the momentum of the Inflation Reduction Act to Make It Real. Our flagship event, the Leaders’ Forum on 24 April, features a series of sessions addressing industrial decarbonisation, the intersection of climate and health, and the funding of climate legislation for communities on the frontline of the crisis.

Apr 30 - Deadline for Inflation Reduction Act funding for codes - Full applications due for competitive awards 

The IRA made funding available to states and units of local governments with authority to adopt building codes and standards for two categories: $330 million to adopt the latest building energy codes, .. and $670 million to adopt building energy codes that meet or exceed the zero energy provisions in the 2021 IECC or other … savings. These grants will support states and local jurisdictions in adopting, implementing, and enforcing the latest model, zero energy codes, or equivalent codes and standards, improving residential and commercial new construction and retrofits, and transitioning the building stock to more efficient, decarbonized buildings for all.
