The 2021 Cycle of the Honor Awards include a direct mention of the Framework for Design Excellence and also references to the 10 measures and their associated metrics. This represents a significant shift that COTE leaders and leaders from other groups within AIA, including some within the Committee on Design, have been working on for several years. These leaders include Bill Leddy, FAIA; Henry Siegel, FAIA; Anne Schopf, FAIA; and others. (It’s worth noting that the COTE Top Ten Awards were founded in 1997 to bring a more robust definition of design excellence to awards until the Institute Honor Awards evolved to do so; COTE leaders at the time thought it might take five years or so.)
Submitters are not required to fill out every measure (they are invited to indicate “not applicable” for a measure), but they are encouraged to fill out as many as possible. As we get closer to the awards cycle itself, we will learn more about how jury instructions will be handled, whether there will be technical juries (as on the Top Ten Awards) to review the metrics information submitted, and other details.
