Progressive Design-Build: Delivering Peak Performance
WE209  |  10-11:30am  |  1.5 LUs/HSW

The role of the architect is at an inflection point in driving a building’s peak performance through design. No longer a sole visionary, an architect is now a key member of an integrated team delivering the most resilient solutions possible. The design-build delivery methodology coalesces an integrated team early, optimizing expertise needed to achieve high-performance goals. Join this session to investigate the overarching considerations within design-build delivery and learn the differences between traditionally delivered design-build and progressive design-build. Explore contractual differences and team structure, and how the early integration of trade partners can support delivery of high-performance buildings.

Optimizing Team Collaboration
WE308  |  1-3:30pm  |  2.5 LUs

Well-managed collaboration is the cornerstone to successful projects, especially when Integrated Project Delivery, Multi-party Agreements, Design-Build, and BIM analysis are part of the project makeup. In this practicum, architects and project managers will gain new skills based on biological science and practical tools to build consensus in multi-disciplinary environments where competing objectives make clear choices difficult. Owner representatives can use these tools to foster collaboration and optimize the value they derive from consultants, builders, and the facilities they produce. Facilitators will present concepts, provide practical tools including checklists that can be taken away and reused in daily practice, and then concretize this knowledge through team decision making exercises in which participants will resolve complex issues through consensus.

Reduce Waste, Cost & Delivery Time With Modular Construction
LL504  |  3-4pm  |  1 LU/HSW

Rising construction costs and skilled labor shortages fuel demand to transform the construction industry and seek innovation in traditional delivery methods. Modular construction is an alternative delivery method that successfully drives construction efficiencies. It also addresses the demand to reduce construction time and improve coordination of trades. These factors, along with green construction’s goal of reducing construction site waste, have made modular construction a method of choice in today’s commercial construction. This session explores solutions for designing high-performance façades to support modular construction trends in commercial and multifamily segments. (LO #4: Choose options for leveraging collaborative design-build methods to deliver modular façades.)

Wastewater Treatment: Stewardship at the Center of the Salish Sea
TH203  |  4-5pm  |  1 LU/HSW

Often removed from public view, large-scale infrastructure projects provide opportunity for unparalleled impact in improving the health and habitat of our local, regional, and international communities. The Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant’s project definition phase employed an innovative approach to large-scale infrastructure planning, incorporating effluent treatment beyond regulatory requirements. This session will highlight how the client led a rigorous and integrative process with a diverse multidisciplinary team, resulting in tertiary treatment; a suite of ecological restoration projects for Iona Island and its foreshore; and elevated opportunities to develop partnerships within the community, province, and country. (LO #3: Use the Integrated Project Delivery method to better coalesce the technical requirements, architectural design, community partnership features, educational opportunities, and environmental stewardship of complex projects.)

Building Stronger with Better Teaming
TH204  |  4-5pm  |  1 LU

Prime consultants and subconsultants don’t always work together as effectively as possible. Last-minute client demands, poor communication, and random assumptions complicate relationships. Beginning with guidelines that set clear expectations for each side of this teaming partnership can help everyone start and finish well. This session will establish working guidelines for teaming crafted by experts, informed by first-hand research from more than 300 design professionals, and written by attendees. Participants walk away with guidelines they can custom fit to their company and their unique teaming opportunities. Better teaming results in better design solutions.

Sonrisa Downtown: Mass Timber Affordable Housing in Sacramento
LL907  |  1:30-2:30pm  |  1 LU

Sonrisa is the first project under Governor Newsom’s Executive Order N-06-19 for Affordable Housing Development, which directs the development of affordable housing on excess State-owned sites and the pursuit of sustainable, innovative, and cost-effective construction methods. Sonrisa is a five-story Type IIIB building with 58 LIHTC-regulated affordable apartments, a majority of which are 270 square foot microunits. While there were many cost increases for implementing the novel CLT system, the immeasurable benefits of environmental sustainability paired with the exposed warm wood and significantly higher ceiling height made it an easy choice. Sonrisa is the first ground-up CLT project in Sacramento and was developed through a public-private partnership between the Capitol Area Community Development Corporation (CACDC) and CFY Development.
