By Jason Larrison My daughter’s high school recently held a “college spirit week” where they had a theme each day. One day, students were asked to wear an outfit themed to the school they want to attend; she wore a shirt from my alma mater Ball State University (chirp chirp). Another day, students were asked to dress for a profession they might want to join. She asked me what an architect’s outfit looks like; I gave her a common stereotype… black shirt, black pants, black shoes, trendy glasses, a notebook in hand, and a fine tipped pen. I gave her a scale for good measure (dad joke intended). I’ve know for a while that she wants to be an architect. ...

By Jason Larrison Like millions of people around the world, I was glued to my television during the Olympics. I look forward to it every two years. I love the feats of human strength and endurance, the sportsmanship shown between competitors, and the collective celebration between nations. I also love the pageantry. The host city brings out their best and rolls out the welcome mat for those attending in person and virtually. Frequently large investments are made in buildings and infrastructure. CCA Fee Considerations by Tyler Schaffer, AIA The CCA phase can be labor intensive, especially on large, complex projects. To successfully deliver a project, a significant amount of time and effort may be necessary by the architect to administer the contract for construction. For lump sum contracts, unforeseen issues that arise during the CCA phase can affect the overall profitability of a project. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to secure additional fees from the client being that the CCA phase is at the end of the project and the client’s budget is diminished. The term “culture eats strategy for breakfast,” coined by management consultant Peter Drucker, hits upon an important yet often overlooked aspect of why the AEC industry struggles to implement sustainable and high-performance design at scale. As I write this letter, the 2024 Paris Olympic games are winding down. Never would I have guessed that the world would debate the daily E. Coli levels of the Seine and whether the Olympic cauldron is really a cauldron . Still, it is hard not to be inspired by how Paris has hosted the Olympics —from taking full advantage of pre-existing and temporary facilities, rather than building new; to tackling those tricky Scope 3 emissions by mapping the Games material footprint and developing strategies to reduce, reuse, and return; to taking advantage of hosting the Olympics to improve both the quality of the Seine and the resilience of the city. Sensory Space: Teaching materials available You might recall that COTE reviewed the book, Experiential Design Schemas (ORO Editions, 2023) by Gail Brager and Mark DeKay; we also hosted a COTE book talk about it. Learning from Ganesh Nayak By Kira Gould In late July, COTE lost a leader and a friend. At 57, Ganesh Nayak, AIA, suffered a heart attack at home and died. This loss, felt most deeply and acutely by his wife, Sitara, and son, Ishan, as well as other family and close friends, is also felt in many communities that Ganesh touched though his personal and professional lives.
