Standard of Care: Confronting the Errors-and-Omissions Taboo up Front
By Dale Munhall, AIA

When should the owner pay to fix imperfections in the design process? When should the architect pay? What is the difference between “errors” and “omissions”, and how can inconsistencies be resolved? Read this article from the Practice Management Digest.

Traditional Project Delivery Method includes Additional CA Services for Better Results
By AIA Knowledge Scholar Morgan Robberson, Assoc. AIA

Even traditional project delivery methods have room for alternatives. Take Morphosis, for example. Aleksander Tamm-Seitz, the project designer for the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, splits his time between the job-site in Dallas, Texas, and the office in Los Angeles, California. Most design firms would leave Construction Administration up to a local architect-of-record. Morphosis, however, operates as a full-service design firm and an architect-of-record in its own right.  Read Morgan’s blog.

Searching for Definitions of Architectural Design Excellence in a Measuring World
2012 Conference for the AIA Committee on Design

Can we find some definitions of architectural excellence upon which we can agree and that we can explain successfully to the silent majority? Is it even something we want to do?  April 12-15, COD will visit Columbus, Indiana, and ask the architects of some of the landmarks there to explain their understanding of the excellences their work embodies. In Seville, in November, we will visit a place where two cultures collide and coexist. Architecture of two distinct traditions intermingle seemingly equally loved by all. And there is much new work we can use to hone our arguments and understandings. To learn more, stay tuned to www.aia.org/cod.

Pre- and Post-Occupancy Evaluation of the Arlington Free Clinic
By Mardelle M. Shepley, Tama Duffy Day, Jamie Huffcut, and Samira Pasha

Healthcare facilities are complex environments that must meet the requirements of a wide range of users. Designers should evaluate the impact of the facilities they design to confirm that they are meeting these needs. This research, which was performed as part of a university course in architectural programming, involves two phases of data collection occurring before (preoccupancy) and after (post-occupancy) the redesign of a healthcare clinic. Read the abstract, complete article, or 2010 Academy Journal.
