Watch: What a Comedian Can Teach an Architect
By Rich Farris AIA

Since I'm heavily involved in the analysis of design theory, aesthetics, and creativity, people I interact with are always showing me other thinkers in the field. It is interesting how people in other professions like education or psychology all come up with very similar themes behind how creativity works. We all come up with about the same concepts, and then our own specific profession kicks in to give our unique insight to the matter.  Read the entire thread on the Committee on Design Discussion Forum.

Listen: Modern American Innovators
By Jim Childress FAIA and Marlene Imirzian AIA

To gain insight into the minds of two internationally renowned designers, architect Gunnar Birkerts, FAIA and landscape architect Dan Kiley, the Committee on Design created a collection of short audiocast interviews. Now, you can access these audios and listen to them at your convenience.

Gunnar Birkerts, who has a reputation for dramatic expressionist buildings and playful use of natural light, was interviewed by Marlene Imirzian, Vice Chair of the Committee on Design.  Jim Childress interviewed Chris Dunn, a favorite landscape architect in Denver who worked with Dan Kiley, about the Miller House Gardens, which was a collaborative project between Kiley and the brilliant architect Eero Saarinen. The Miller House Gardens remain a prime example of the way in which architects and landscape architects should work together. Listen to the audiocasts of Gunnar Birkerts and Chris Dunn now on AIA KnowledgeNet.

Feedback Requested: Transitioning to BIM
By Francois Levy AIA

I am in the process of writing an article on BIM for small firms as part of a book, and I'd like to include a side-bar case study chronicling an actual firm's transition to BIM.  If you or your firm would like to contribute an approx. 500-word article and a few images describing your transition to BIM, please email me directly. Supplemental Service Feature: Accessibility Compliance
Contributed by John P. S. Salmen AIA

Lawsuits stemming from accusations that ADA standards have not been followed are proliferating. Building owners and architects want to comply with ADA regulations but find them vague and inconsistent. Interpretations vary from state to state and case to case. Helping clients to navigate this maze can be a profitable service for architects who feel comfortable with the issues. View the entire article. Download the presentation from the AIA’s Supplemental Architectural Services series.
