Get your copy of An Architect's Guide to Integrating Energy Modeling in the Design Process

The AIA Energy Modeling Practice Guide serves to not only demystify energy modeling in general but also to provide tips and information that will help architects to better discuss energy modeling; the assumptions, the process, the tools and what the output means to potential design decisions - with their engineers, energy modelers, consultants, contractors, code officials and clients.

Written and assembled by a committee of architects, sustainability experts, and government building science officials, as well as AIA staff, the guide surveys a wide swath of the building design and construction industry to present baseline best practices for empirically evaluating the energy performance of buildings.

Software

"I have been asked by a client to provide very limited services for a office remodeling. AutoCAD seems overkill for such a small project and am considering using Sketchup with layout. Have others found this to be an optimal use of a different platform for smaller projects?" Read more and join the discussion.

For: Architects Desiging Homes. Against: other entities "certifying" "designers"

This is in response to some other recent comments on CRAN about the NAHB considering creating a certification program for "home designers." Read more and join the discussion.

AIA TrustAIA Trust Dental Plan

Dear AIA Members,
I just wanted to give all a heads up warning to those of you who may subscribe to the AIA Trust Dental Plan. I have been a subscriber to that plan for some years now, and only just discovered that I am paying more money in than I could ever possibly get back …
I had really hoped the AIA would have my back on this one. Buyer Beware!

Mac Work Stations ~ Memory Leak

Our office just changed over to IMac's with Lion OS, 2g Graphics Cards, 16g Memory. Each machine has 16g of memory and its all used up by either the end of the day or the next morning. The Stations start posting warnings that MAC OS has run out of memory and you must close applications or it just locks up. Even after closing applications memory is not reclaimed. The purge command works to reclaim memory. Have installed IClean Memory and set it to reclaim at minimal memory level to get some some of it back but it take just as long or longer to reclaim memory as just doing reboot....

Any thoughts? Suggestions? (Other than boot the macs to the curb go back to PCs). Read more and join the discussion.

"Moral Responsibility" of Justice Architects

In the opening plenary session on Wednesday, Professor George Baird challenged Justice Architects to take "moral responsibility" for their projects. This raised the question during the Q & A session about what it means, as an Architect, to take moral responsibility for one's designs....

What does it mean for Justice Architects to "take moral responsibility" for the projects they design? Is the previous question a proper question for Justice Architects to consider? If not, what is? Does taking responsibility require that Justice Architects become active participants in policy discussions? Read more and join the discussion.
