RE: Punch List [in the Field]
Asked by Bradford Prestbo AIA

We are punchlisting a project in the very near future, and are interested in using a smart phone or tablet. What kind of systems do you or your practice employ to make this process more streamlined?

The Opportunity is in the Eye of the Beholder
By Associate Professor Peter Jamieson
Strategic Adviser, Learning Environment Design, University of Melbourne

The greatest potential for transforming the educational experience in schools, or universities, resides in the thousands of existing classrooms that comprise the bulk of our institutional campuses. How do we overcome the stifling claustrophobia of the standard school classroom resulting from insufficient space and far too many students? A large part of my work as a Learning Environment Designer in my role at the University of Melbourne, or via my contributions to projects at schools or other institutions, has been directed at the transformation of existing spaces. RE: iPad Purchase Policies
Asked by Steven Haines Assoc. AIA

I am curious how firms are handling the purchase of iPads for use by their staff.  We have a number of early adopters for whom the firm has purchased iPads and pays the monthly service through Verizon or ATT.  Currently apps are the responsibility of the individual and are not reimbursed.  We are considering a number of options for further distribution coupled with many requests.  There is no doubt the device is useful for business but also a very personal device at the same time. View PMKC thread. | View TAP thread.

Risk Management for the Small Design Firm: Dealing with the “Big Three”
Sponsored by the Small Project Practitioners Knowledge Community
Wednesday, March 21, 2012 | 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM | Earn 1.5 CEHs| Register Now at No Cost

A recent survey highlighted three key risk concerns for Small Firm owners: working for the wrong client, working without an adequate contract, and failure to do a thorough job during construction administration. Improperly managed, these risks can evolve into professional liability claims against architects, and might cause major damage to a Small Firm.

This seminar will examine root causes and introduce several mitigation tactics to deal with client selection, contract management, and construction phase risks. The business of design can be a risky proposition, and a better understanding of the “Big Three” will improve your chances of success.

The risk management webinar will NOT be recorded, so do not miss this opportunity to attend this free event.

Beyond Marketing: Social Media for Recruiting and Retention, Research and Development, and Knowledge
Sponsored by the Practice Management Knowledge Community
Thursday, March 22, 2012 | 1:00 PM – 2:15 PM | Earn 1.23 CEHs| Register Now at No Cost

Knowledge Architecture recently completed a study on the social media activities of over 250 of the largest architecture and engineering firms in North America. Over half of the architecture and engineering firms we surveyed are actively using social media. Of those firms, almost all of them were using social media to market their firms, which did not come as a surprise. However, we were surprised by the number of firms who were using social media for purposes other than marketing, such as recruiting and retention, research and development, and knowledge management. This session will contain three parts: 1) Presentation of research findings 2) Discussion of key insights and trends yielded by our research 3) Presentation of case studies which indicate where social media is heading for architects and engineers.
