The AIA Housing and Community Development Knowledge Community (HCD) is a network of architects and allied stakeholders that promotes equity in housing, excellence in residential design, and sustainable, vibrant communities for all, through education, research, awards, and advocacy.
Architects are being asked to understand where and how to build better in the face of mass migration, population growth, resource stress and associated risks posed by natural disasters and climate risk. The AIA and its members are at the forefront of addressing these issues highlighted by a commitment to the New Urban Agenda that aims to provide quality housing to people and communities around the world. Here in the US, we are coming to grips with the transformation of communities and the way we build to ensure a the health, safety and welfare of all. In this webinar Illya Azaroff, AIA will take you through a series of housing projects that directly address risk through resilient adaptation, and beyond code building practices. He will introduce several relevant resources covering residential construction and retrofit to achieve resilient building design and benefit to the stake holders.
Delivering a Sustainable-Resilient building as architects is a minimum requirement of practice in the 21st century. This seminar covers resilient residential retrofit in historic districts (1865 Masonry Town house), building new single family home (#HurricaneStrong home) in an at risk coastal community and dealing with changing flood mapping designations by elevating existing structures (coastal bungalow). These three circumstance and scales of projects will give the attendee information that is relevant to practice around the country and around the globe.
Resources for design and construction, beyond code resilient building practices such as FORTIFIED from IBHS and where to find relevant information tied to each region of the US will be made available through this presentation.
