This session will consider the complex, collaborative process of placemaking and the economic, environmental and social aspects of design. It will examine the architect’s role in the development of urban projects and emerging trends in practice. The session will also explore the impact of awards programs in highlighting innovation and projects that shape the future of American cities.
Founded in 1987, the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence celebrates urban places distinguished by quality design and their contributions to the social and economic vitality of our nation's cities. Anne-Marie Lubenau, AIA, will provide an overview of the award including the intensive application and selection process, as well as case studies about past winners available to architecture and planning professionals. She will share highlights about the five projects that received the 2013 Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence including: six houses in Dallas, a 222-unit affordable housing project in the Bronx, a 7,300 square foot restaurant and food training facility in Chicago, an 85-acre waterfront park in Louisville and a 3.5-acre arts campus in Providence. Brent Brown, AIA, will discuss the development of Silver Medalist Congo Street Initiative, its impact in Dallas and contributions to public interest and urban design.

Report AIA Continuing Education
Attendees will earn 1.0 AIA LUs. A link to a survey will be provided both at the end of the webinar and in a follow-up email sent one hour after the end of the webinar. All attendees at each site submit one form: 1) page one: webinar survey and 2) page two: CES report form. The survey must be completed within 24 hours of the webinar. AIA members and IDP record holders will have their credit recorded within 48 hours of the webinar. All attendees will be prompted to download a certificate of completion at the end of the survey.

Speakers
Anne-Marie Lubenau, AIA, is director of the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence at the Bruner Foundation in Cambridge, MA. An architect, educator and nonprofit leader, she has focused on engaging people in the design of the built environment. Prior to joining the Bruner Foundation Ms. Lubenau served as CEO of the Community Center of Pittsburgh, practiced architecture and taught classes at Carnegie Mellon. She was a 2012 Loeb Fellow at Harvard University.
Brent A. Brown, AIA, is a Dallas architect working to balance social, economic, and environmental issues by deploying design to enhance livability in Dallas. Mr. Brown founded the buildingcommunity WORKSHOP, a local non-profit community design resource and is the Founding Director of the City of Dallas’ CityDesign Studio stewarding the urban design vision for the city. By engaging stakeholders, Brent deploys a community-led public design method building shared vision for the city's future.
