Call for volunteers

Information

The AIA Knowledge Communities are volunteer member-led special interest groups of the AIA national organization.  They help members to connect with others who share the same passions and commitment—and develop projects that advance the profession and the collective work of the AIA.

The Communities of Practice (temporary name) is the group of four KCs that focus on the decisions you make in running your firm:

  • Construction Contract Administration
  • Project Delivery
  • Practice Management
  • Technology in Architectural Practice

Our leadership groups are usually composed of at least five members who serve for up to 5 years, with support from project-based committees and part-time AIA staff. We are currently seeking applications from individuals who have demonstrated leadership across these topic areas. These four communities are currently evolving to better serve members and generate value. As such, we are seeking leaders who welcome change, demonstrate strategic thinking, and value efficient, collaborative service to members.

The Communities of Practice work to deliver meaningful content across 20,000 members in many ways, including but not limited to:

  • Virtual educational content: we work with AIAU to develop courses for the virtual learner in alignment with AIA priorities.
  • In-person educational content: New in 2023, we’ve hosted the TAP symposium during the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design.
  • AIA Conference on Architecture: we seek to provide multiple ways to connect our membership at Conference, including hosting topical forums, holding meet-ups, and submitting sessions.
  • Written content: we publish a wide range of content, from the quarterly PM Digest to the CCA white papers, as well as contributing to the Best Practices collection on aia.org.

Duties and Expectations

  • 1 hour/month: Participate in one-hour monthly conference call
  • 2-10 hours/month (varies): Champion one of the primary initiatives and programs (and any associated project conference calls)
  • Events: You may be asked to attend AIA events (Conference, Leadership Summit), or support an event you’ve helped create. Reimbursement for travel is not guaranteed.
  • Network: Provide or find expertise for content development. This may include subject matter experts/authors for articles, speaking engagements, webinars or Best Practices.

Qualifications statements:

  • Letter of interest, including a vision of what you would like to accomplish during your appointment. Also discuss what special qualities or resources you can offer the committee as it relates to their objectives. Please include the following paragraph or something similar in this letter—you may alter it to be more specific to your situation, but we’re looking for a confirmation that you have your firm’s commitment to supporting your involvement:
    • Statement of commitment: I attest that I have discussed this potential volunteer commitment with anyone professional partners I may have, including my supervisor(s) or firm partner(s) (or am a solo practitioner). I have full support to participate in this activity, recognizing that it will ask me to dedicate time and energy in this volunteer capacity.
  • Resume with:
    • Professional accomplishments including volunteer activities.
    • Skills - leadership, organizational, speaking as well as your position and duties in your firm; what are the particular practice management positions and skills that you would bring to the committee that complement the existing leadership.

The American Institute of Architects actively promotes a diverse profession, including race, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, and sexual orientation. We strive to be an inclusive community representing diversity of thought, geographic diversity, and traditional and non-traditional practice, as well as providing opportunities for seasoned professionals, associate members and young architects.

Please submit the above information via the following link. Applications are scheduled to open on May 31, 2024, and are due July 8, 2024 by 5pm Eastern.
