Information

The AIA Knowledge Communities are volunteer member-led special interest groups of the AIA national organization.  They help members to connect with others who share the same passions and commitment—and develop projects that advance the profession and the collective work of the AIA.

As an AIA Knowledge Community, the Practice Management Knowledge Community (PMKC) discovers, generates, organizes and shares insights, resources, and tools that enable architects to practice more effectively (learn more at www.aia.org/pm). We encourage all members to participate by serving on a project subcommittee or by applying to serve on the national Leadership Group (LG).

The PMKC LG is usually composed of at least five members who serve for up to five years, with support from project-based committees and part-time AIA staff. We are currently seeking statements of qualifications from individuals who have demonstrated leadership in practice management. We currently have one (1) open positions that would begin in January 2024 and end December 2028.

The PMKC LG works to fulfill our mission and deliver meaningful content to the 12,500 members of the Practice Management community in several areas:

  • PM Digest: a tri-annual or quarterly periodic compilation of articles on a wide range of practice issues; a committee member serves as the yearly editor responsible for developing the editorial content and securing authors for articles.

  • Educational content: PMKC seeks to develop content that will support the mission; the content may be displayed via AIAU; live in-person presentations; or webinars. Content can also include written material for either the PM Digest or the Best Practices collection.

  • Best Practices: a subcommittee of the PMKC LG reviews/juries, develops, expands and maintains the collected Best Practices that are available to AIA members on the AIA website; subcommittee members are responsible for developing and finding experts on selected topics and shepherding the authors through the process.

  • AIA Conference on Architecture: When hosted in-person, the PMKC LG traditionally coordinates the Practice Management Luncheon at Conference, develops and presents a session focused on practice management, and meets to develop our strategic plan for the coming year.

  • Fall conference: participation at an annual conference focused on practice issues. Past iterations have included GROW at the AIA New York Chapter in 2014 and 2015, a Mini-MBA at the AIA South Atlantic Regional conference in 2016, and a session at CRAN’s symposium in 2017 and 2018.

Duties and Expectations

  • 1 hour/month: Participate in one-hour monthly conference call

  • 2-10 hours/month (varies): Champion one of the primary initiatives and programs (and any associated project conference calls)

  • Conferences:

    • Strong priority: Attend annual three-day AIA Knowledge Leadership Assembly, usually in July, or replacement training calls. If in-person, may be partially reimbursed. May be virtual or in-person in 2024.

      • What is this? KLA provides an opportunity for knowledge community leaders, the Board Knowledge Committee, and AIA staff to network, share knowledge and best practices, and build coalitions. This is the most critical meeting to attend.

    • Priority: Attend PMKC-sponsored/-supported conference, if committee engages in one. May be partially reimbursed.

    • Preferred: Attend PMKC activities during the AIA Conference on Architecture each spring. Usually not reimbursed. Expected to be in-person in Washington, DC in 2024.

  • Provide or find expertise about topics for education about practice topics. This may include subject matter experts/authors for articles, speaking engagements, webinars or white papers.

Qualifications statements:

  • Letter of interest, including a vision of what you would like to accomplish during your appointment. Also discuss what special qualities or resources you can offer the committee as it relates to their objectives.

  • Resume with:

    • Professional accomplishments including volunteer activities.

    • Skills - leadership, organizational, speaking as well as your position and duties in your firm; what are the particular practice management positions and skills that you would bring to the committee that complement the existing leadership.

  • Letter of commitment from a leader in your firm that demonstrates your firm’s commitment to supporting your involvement.

The American Institute of Architects actively promotes a diverse profession, including race, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, and sexual orientation. PMKC strives to be an inclusive Knowledge Community representing diversity of thought, geographic diversity, and traditional and non-traditional practice, as well as providing opportunities for seasoned professionals, associate members and young architects.

Please submit the above information via the following link. The submission form will open on May 15. Applications are due by June 16 at 5pm ET
