You can't ask AI to extrapolate from ordinances to create the allowed building envelope, the variables that have to be analyzed require a knowledgeable step-by-step analysis of the local zoning code, an understanding of how to read and apply the Building Code, the various overlays of laws from regional oversight, an ability to parse historic preservation regs as they apply, etc. etc. We all know that AI hallucinates, and there's no way to backtrack and define the way the regulations were specifically used and interpreted in the solution. It's all black box.
Now some of the big AEC firms are using AI to generate various scenarios for a solution using a preliminary digital model developed to approximately the design development phase. In other words, human judgement is a prerequisite for machine architectural design that can model various priorities within a range of analyzed design parameters.
"We aren't looking to AI to create our designs, [but] rather bringing together human ingenuity and the compute power of these technologies to create value for our clients," Martin stated.
Meanwhile, ZGF Architects uses AI in more of a utilitarian way than for primary design. The firm is an early experimenter and cautious adopter of AI, computational design specialist Jonah Hawk said.
ZGF explored main visual generative AI tools such as Midjourney, OpenAI programs such as DALL·E and DALL·E 3, and Stable Diffusion, a text-to-image model from Stability AI.

AI making an architect's dream come true: Just put in the project address and AI will draw the project parameters with the correct setbacks, building heights and massing. That was one of the promises in one of several hundred sessions in which architects….
