    There has to be an enormous, critical reason to build a new building in the next five to 10 years. We ought to find every way possible to create longer use of what we've already built and adaptively reuse the built environment that we own, rather than build a new one, because right now we can't afford the carbon.

    Hello;
    Do you remember your College physics? Can you tell us what Boyle’s Law and Charles law say? These are the basic gas laws.
    Thanks,

    This is an easy one and love the simplicity of the formula
    P1xV1 over T1 equals P2XV2 over T2. You can change the variables around to get any result you need.

    Kira, right on!  Our schools of architecture need to teach their students how to do just that!

    Thanks.
    Is the atmosphere a fixed volume or can it expand and contract when heated? Is it a fixed volume in your equations? Seems like an easy question since it expands and contracts every day!

    While logically convincing, from a global perspective not building new buildings appears to be quite unrealistic given the projections of population growth.

    Better to influence how to minimize impact of new construction.

    AIA reported remodeling being 50% of US billings: https://www.aia.org/articles/6502007-renovation-claims-50-share-of-firm-billing.  This is in inline with population growth: https://usafacts.org/state-of-the-union/population/?msclkid=44b56f18e4c81e25f0150d97db89c629.

    This is in line with your suggestion.
    Respectfully

     why is it either or?  While I disagree with you, I think we can and should be doing both.  In some parts of the world construction of new human shelter is necessary.  In the U.S., let's exhaust our opportunities for extended use and adaptive reuse before we build anything new.

    Dear Mr. Philipsen:
    At least in the US, the population growth is not because of births, but because of longevity: https://www.populationpyramid.net/united-states-of-america/2100/. Fortunately, or not, we're all living longer.  Your point about population growth is true in Africa and parts of Asia, but as a trend, women are having fewer children per person in the US and more developed countries.  The US has a population growth of less than 1% https://usafacts.org/state-of-the-union/population/?msclkid=44b56f18e4c81e25f0150d97db89c629.  I believe Kira and Bob Berkebile's point is valid, we really need to question building new and determine how we can leverage what we have.  I'm not sure if you saw, but remodeling claimed 50% of Architect's billings in the US, the first time ever: https://www.aia.org/articles/6502007-renovation-claims-50-share-of-firm-billing).

    I think we need to refocus on how we grow to consider our real needs and not projecting the past forward, in my humble opinion.
    Thoughtfully.
