Senior Housing Design Directions for a Post-Pandemic World

Description
The senior population has been uniquely vulnerable to COVID-19, and this pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in the programming of senior living spaces. New strategies for health and safety will be crucial in the post-COVID designs for all senior environments including multi-family housing, mixed-use, and hospitality. Join the Design for Aging Knowledge Community as we explore COVID’s impact on the design and daily operations of senior environments, and best practices to create safer spaces for residents, families, and caregivers.

Understand how the 2020 pandemic has affected the programming, space planning and design for all levels of senior housing.
Appreciate the design differences after the pandemic and why they matter.

Speakers
Dean Maddalena, AIA
Dean Maddalena, licensed architect and President of studioSIX5, has dedicated a large part of his 32-year career to the research and design of senior living environments. Dean has worked in all facets of senior design and for all levels of care throughout the United States. He was a member of the Lifecare Advisory Council and Durkan Design Council. Dean also designs flooring and furniture product for leading manufacturers in senior living. Dean’s design success has been recognized with awards from the American Institute of Architects, Starnet and a first place national design award from NAHB +50 for Sagewood and Vivante.
Karla Jackson
Karla Jackson is a managing Principal at StudioSIX5, and brings over 30 years of experience in interior and environmental design, with the last 15 years focused exclusively on design for senior housing. Specializing in gerontology and the effects of the built environment on individuals living with dementia and Alzheimer’s, Karla has been published in the Southwest Journal on Aging, interviewed by numerous senior living publications, and has been a featured speaker at multiple industry conferences. Karla is passionate about elevating design for seniors by creating unique, engaging environments, and optimizing quality of life for residents and their families.
