Breaking the Cycle: Learning from the Next Generation

10-20-2021 01:11 PM

Breaking the Cycle is the second international student design competition organized by the Canadian Academy of Architecture for Justice (CAAJ). Students from all over the world were invited to speculate on the systemic issues that pervade the criminal justice system and to submit proposals for a new Community Justice Centre.  New models that rethink how justice is delivered require a commensurate evolution in building typology that connects individuals with services to support their health and recovery. As the next generation of architects who will be leading this change, students bring a fresh perspective on both the community justice typology and justice reform. The panel, consisting of jury members, architects, students, and community court experts, will use the results of the competition as a spring point for discussions about the future of justice delivery and the direction of community justice centers.
