DFA Fellowship: Design for Seniors

The 2021-2022 Fellowship application is closed.

The Design for Aging Knowledge Community offers a fellowship grant for students and young professionals in an Undergraduate or Graduate study of an Architecture Program or aging focused program (nursing, gerontology, health administration, product design, industrial design, landscape, etc.).

The fellowship will increase their awareness of the needs and nature of aging in place, attracting talented young architects, designers, professionals and students to the field and advancing the knowledge of planning and design for senior living environments. Awards typically range from $5,000–$15,000.

Research topics should focus on the relationship between the built environment and resident quality of life and wellness of future models of care. Example topics could include but are not limited to:

  • Senior housing in the post-COVID-19 world
  • New concepts in design for dementia
  • Reuse of dilapidated buildings such as mall, hotels, or offices
  • Impacts of new technologies on environment and models of care
  • Opportunities and benefits of mixed use and/or intergenerational communities
  • The future of age friendly city design and planning
  • Next generation skilled nursing household design
  • Strategies for aging successfully in one’s own home
