Designing for Equity in Justice and Civic Buildings

10-20-2021 12:58 PM

When the design process is not inclusive and we do not consider issues of racial, economic and social justice, the result is a built environment that is not equitable and reinforces existing social inequalities. We are at a critical moment in history and architects must meet this moment. At HOK we are working to integrate ‘Designing for Equity’ through standardized practices that promote equitable outcomes. Our vision is to design spaces where all human needs are met in an equitable and sustainable manner; foster communities with equal access to shelter, health and nature; and design spaces that enrich and inspire all people. We will present how standardized practices can encompass design principles, design approach and design culture. We will provide research supporting the hypothesis to include community empowerment, connections to infrastructure, promoting health and well-being and, equitable access. We will present Justice case studies that can inform best practices.
