The relative balances of independence, collaboration, commitment, sacrifice, mentoring, support, and oversight between staff and management have been evolving for several years. While some firms have long-ago gone virtual, with some even dissolving the bonds of formal employment in favor of architectural gig work, COVID was a catalyst causing all other practices to adapt. In many cases, this has brought to light that the unspoken expectations of both staff and management differ.

With over 35 years of broad experience, Scott is the founder of Knu Design where he uses architecture to bring people together in authentic places, focusing on community-building and affordable housing. He is a member of the leadership group of AIA's Practice Management Knowledge Community.
Heather Pierce, SPHRHR Leader, Associate Principal, LS3P
Associate Principal Heather Pierce, MBA, serves as LS3P’s Human Resources Leader. Heather brings over 18 years of comprehensive hands-on HR experience, from recruiting to employee relations, from benefits to strategic planning, including significant leadership roles in the AEC industry.
In addition to holding the highest accreditation by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRMP-SCP), Heather holds both a Master of Science in Project Management (with honors) as well as a Master of Business Administration (with honors) from the Citadel, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (with honors) from Hollins University. Heather is a Riley Fellow of the Furman University Diversity Leaders Initiative.
An avid reader, she and her husband live in Charleston, SC with their two dogs Scout and Maddy.
Justus PangProject Manager II / Architect, Nevada State Public Works Division
Justus Pang is a registered architect who has worked in Berkeley, Houston, and Las Vegas. His project history in private practice includes residential remodels, new apartment complexes, adaptive reuse conversions, and commercial, government, and hospitality tenant improvements.Other experience includes working as a laborer in a construction crew after college and summer internships with a landscape architect. Since 2018, he has worked for the State of Nevada as an Owner’s Project Manager.Having participated within all roles within the industry, his focus is on fairness to all parties, strict quality control of the design and construction documentation, fostering a collaborative environment, and continuous process improvement.
Nea Poole, AIAPrincipal, Poole & Poole Architecture
Nea May Poole, AIA, NCARB is managing partner and COO of Poole & Poole Architecture (2PA), a Virginia based firm with offices in Nashville and Charleston. A founding principal, Nea champions 2PA’s mission to creative livable and sustainable communities while offering innovative solutions, excellence in design and superior client service.
She is passionate about other cornerstone of the practice, its most important asset, the “2PA Community”. She holds a strong believe in the importance of work/life balance and helps to foster an environment that encourages respect, mentoring, and the growth of their team both personally and professionally.
She helps to lead the design direction for the company, mentoring 2PA's studio and imparts her many years of experiences through the in-house continuing education program, 2PA University. A testament to the success of this leadership is the many local and national awards the firm has won.
She is an active member of the AIA, currently on the AIA Richmond Board’s Executive Committee as Treasurer and is Chair of the Public Relations Committee.
Nea is a graduate of the University of Virginia's School of Architecture and holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree. She lives outside of Richmond, Virginia with her husband and two children in a barn they renovated into their home.
Rachel Oleinick, AIAVice Principal, Northworks Architects + Planners
Rachel is a licensed architect in Illinois with over 15 years' experience in residential construction, ranging from low-cost multi-family adaptive reuse to custom single-family and multi-family new construction. Prior to joining Northworks, she worked at Tigerman McCurry Architects and was the project manager for the "Lincoln Park Residence," published in Architectural Record in the Record Houses issue in April of 2016.
Her recent work includes custom single-family residences on the lakefront, and a new luxury mid-rise residential building in the West Loop. Rachel has developed her specific approach to project documentation and management based on years of experience with demanding clients, dynamic project teams, and unique construction detailing. She received her Bachelors of Architecture from the Pennsylvania State University.
Rachel is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Lecture Chair for Chicago Women in Architecture. Outside of the office, Rachel spends her free time knitting and working on her deadlift PR.
