    Working Abroad in India - Pros, Cons, & Ways Forward

    The AIA and the AIA Chicago are hosting a morning training session to help you and your firm take advantage of the numerous architectural opportunities in thriving and emerging overseas markets. Working Abroad in India - Pros, Cons, & Ways Forward will provide you with first-hand knowledge of the ins and outs of working in foreign countries. India offers a myriad of opportunities to expand your business portfolio and serves as a case study for any international work. The event will be hosted at AIA Chicago, 35 East Wacker Drive from 8:30am until noon.

    This training session will assist firms and members by connecting them with members who have done work in India, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the US Export-Import Bank, and the Small Business Administration.

    Attendees will learn about business opportunities that are available in India and other international markets, resources provided by the Federal government, and how to best use those resources. Problems that can occur while working abroad, how business practices differ from the United States, and how to comply with foreign laws will also be topics of discussion.

      • Firms who were unsuccessful applicants to the Trade Mission

      • Firms who are interested in moving their firms abroad

    Speaker Biographies:

    Eugene Alford:

      In more than two decades at the U.S. Department of Commerce, Eugene Alford has advocated on behalf of U.S. businesses in every region of the world, negotiating trade agreements, opening markets and promoting U.S. services exports. Mr. Alford has represented the U.S. Government at the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, the International Civil Aviation Organization, as well as in bilateral and multilateral meetings and negotiations with dozens of countries. A Senior international Trade Specialist on the Export Facilitation Services Team, he works with industry leaders from diverse sectors including architecture, engineering, construction and planning services, and air transport and express delivery services. Mr. Alford is also the Team Leader for AIA's Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) award, which focuses resources from the Department of Commerce and AIA to gain U.S. architecture and design firms new business opportunities in the India and Sri Lanka markets.

      Mr. Alford holds degrees from the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado, Boulder.

    L. Randall Buescher, AIA:

      L. Randall Buescher is Vice President ' Practice Leader International at HOK. Mr. Buescher, as the NCR Chicago Principal of the International Group, brings a wide range of expertise in all phases and methods of project delivery including design of mixed use developments, coordination of architectural, engineering and construction staff, coordination and supervision of construction documents, contract negotiation, construction administration, cost management, scheduling and construction observation. With over 30 years of experience, Mr. Buescher assembles and leads project teams inspiring them to create and construct superiorly executed facilities while exceeding the clients' expectations. He has over five continuous years working in India, with more than 30 trips in country. He has also worked in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Tanzania.

    Jonathan Orlove, AIA:

      Jonathan Orlove is Director of Project Management at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. Mr. Orlove has more than twenty years of experience in the field of architecture. His portfolio encompasses a diverse range of project types, located domestically and overseas, including large-scale mixed-use, high-rise and low-rise residential, commercial and corporate headquarters, healthcare, and hospitality. With extensive experience as a project manager, Mr. Orlove has comprehensive knowledge of the design process, from the inception of a project through its design, construction and closeout. With his broad perspective of the practice of architecture internationally, Mr. Orlove has spearheaded AS+GG's business development activities in India. Prior to joining AS+GG in 2007, Jonathan was an Associate Partner and Project Manager in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. He also worked for Ram Carmi Architects in Tel Aviv, Israel.

    Debra Rogers:

      Debra Rogers is a Senior International Trade Specialist at the U.S. Department of Commerce Commercial Service office in Chicago. The mission of her agency is to help U.S. companies expand their exports of goods and services. Ms. Rogers specializes in services exports, such as architectural and engineering services, education & training, franchising, and tourism. Before coming to Chicago, Ms. Rogers served as International Trade Specialist in the Office of Africa at Department of Commerce headquarters in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining the Department of Commerce in 1991, Ms. Rogers worked as a Credit Union Advisor in Cameroon, as an International Operations Specialist for a grain trading company in Minneapolis and a freight forwarding company in St. Paul. She speaks German and French, has lived overseas in Germany, Cameroon, and Korea, and has visited over 40 additional countries.
