AIA Regional and Urban Design Committee Newsletter March 2024

Last month, AIA held the 2024 Leadership Summit. It is a great opportunity to connect with leadership from AIA, its chapters, and its knowledge communities. The event formerly known as Grassroots is also an opportunity to climb Capitol Hill and meet with Senators and Representatives.

One of the topics of conversation was HR 7024 (known as the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers) which includes modifications to the low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) by increasing the base allocation and lowering the tax-exempt bond financing requirement. These changes help build more affordable housing, providing opportunities to increase density and housing diversity in our urban areas.

It is important that architects and urban designers engage with our elected and appointed officials at the local, state, and federal levels. If you need help getting started, reach out to us or your chapter leadership.

Regulations and policies impact our efforts to grow and improve our communities. The AIA’s Regional and Urban Design Committee will continue to explore these and other topics in 2024. In April, RUDC member Rex Cabaniss, AIA will lead an AIAU Panel on the changing roles of downtown, suburbs, and neighborhoods and how they impact diversity, equity, & inclusion. And at AIA24, Scott Archer, AIA and I will lead a forum discussion on urban and regional design in the Washington, DC region. Plus, RUDC will host a reception for urban design-focused architects. More information on the panel and AIA24 events are below; sign up now!

I look forward to working with you through the year and hope to see you at AIA24!

Warm regards,

Jason Larrison, AIA
