Dear HRC members,

Welcome to Spring 2024! Our committee has been working diligently to ensure that we provide engaging seminars and luncheons, legislative direction, and task force member engagement.

Our goals set for 2023 were the following:

  • Provide value and tangible benefits to our membership through shared knowledge and advocacy
  • Promote networks and partnerships with preservation groups as well as other KCs to support climate action, justice, and equity
  • Actively engage/advise with AIA overall on preservation related items
  • Provide various educational opportunities to our membership
  • Serve as a knowledge base and clearinghouse of preservation related news/events

I am happy to report that we were able to meet our goals in tangible ways. Our past Chair Liz Hallas, AIA, was actively engaged in our AIA knowledge communities COTE, Environment, and Design. We had a fantastic annual Taliesin Colloquium where we had serious conversations about building reuse, climate change and equity, and how our Preservation Standards of the NPS address them and how we as a community can start asking for open conversations about this. A task force was created in the Fall 2023 to continue the conversation and analysis. This task force is headed by Elisa Skaggs. Please contact Elisa at skaggs@page-turnbull.com for more information.

Our 2024 HRC Committee Members are:

  • Liz Hallas, AIA Past Chair
  • Lorraine Minatoishi, AIA, PhD Board Chair
  • Robert Burns, AIA 2025 Chair
  • Elisa Skaggs, AIA 2026 Chair
  • Joseph Smith, AIA 2027 Chair

This year 2024, we will continue on this momentum as we engage with the National Park Service (NPS) in a larger platform at the AIA Conference June 5-9, 2024. There are 2 half-day training seminars scheduled on the topic of Tax Credits and updates to the Preservation Standards. The first half day is on June 5 and the second half-day is June 9, so please save the dates.

2024 events lineup are:

  1. Taliesin ’24 – Adaptability and Resiliency, April 5-6, 2024 . We have a star-studded line-up. This conference also continues in the vein of 2023, as we look at concrete example projects of resiliency, adaptive reuse, and the changes that we see in the preservation profession.
  2. AIA Conference June 5-9, 2024
  3. Traditional Building Conference in Savannah October 23-24, 2024 - Peterson Prize exhibit and ceremony.
