After using Sema4 and then Deltek for many years, we decided to seek a system more suited to the needs of a small firm of under a dozen people.  Is anyone using a program that includes web access that they believe is wonderful?

    Ralph -

Look into ArchiOffice.  It was written by Architects for Architects and is very intuitive.  It works both on Macs and PC's and is a very comprehensive piece of software.

I have used Deltak in a past life and it is a large beast that takes too much time to use.  We actually joked that we need to add a time card line item for using Deltek.

I ran a small firm for a couple of years using the online service FreshBooks.  It's geared toward any service profession but is less architect-specific than Archi-Office.  It's quick to learn and you can do timesheets, automatic invoicing and project tracking.  For the basics, I found it quite helpful.

Although not a web based tool, you may look into Architecture Information Manager (AIM). The database runs on a filemaker background, has modules you purchase separately, is scaleable to company size and needs, and was developed by an architect as well.

We use AIM at our office and manage contacts, documents, project leads, construction administration, construction details, staffing, storage info., marketing, etc. Our billing and time sheets are done outside of AIM due to our own company needs.

You may want to look at Axium's Ajera package. I think it's an excellent package for the small to medium sized firm. We have been using it for four years and are very pleased with the results.

    Ralph,
You might want to take a look at Clearview. http://www.clearviewsoftware.net/
It's a web-based service and thus will require less
    upfront, in-house, infrastructure costs.

Filemaker Pro is the basis for our home grown Info System. It now (18 yrs later ) has files for correspondence, transmittals, pay app transmittals, memos to file, meeting notes, a rolodex (people & places), cash flow, invoices, project balance sheets, project check lists & tasks, space use planing, probable cost files, a beam sizer program for steel and wood, IBC worksheets, Our specifications ( this is really cool- press buttons to include),  color selection list, door and hardware schedules, camera and data schedules, addendums, Bid files and distribution, change orders, proposal requests, RFI and issues, substantial completion checklist, warranty work orders, and office card catalog.
It is project based( find by project ) so retrieval is easy.

Take a look at File Marker Pro.
