As a part of the preparations for COD's Fall Conference in Portland, we'd like to initiate a discussion on what to read or movies/shows to watch about Portland before you go there. The TV show Portlandia will occur to many of you but are there other films, shows or books you would recommend to get some additional background on Portland?

I can offer a few book titles to start:

This Is Portland: The city you've heard you should like by Alexander Barrett

Fugitives And Refugees: A Walk In Portland, Oregon by Chuck Palahniuk

Jumptown: The Golden Years Of Portland Jazz, 1942-1957 by Robert Dietsche

The Girl Who Fell From The Sky by Heidi Durrow

Lean On Pete by Willy Vlautin

For bird-fanciers, Portland offers the annual Vaux's swift migration stop at the Chapman School chimney. Normally in the hour before sunset each evening in September. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhNqso6VElE

The COD Fall Conference is on the AIA.ORG Events page as a featured event:  http://www.aia.org/conferences/index.htm.  Scroll down to the Upcoming Events box and you'll see the conference information.

I'll find out why none of the KC Fall Conferences appear on the Calendar of Events.

Let me know if you have questions.
