Steve%20Winkel%20headshot.jpgThe International Code Council has recognized Steven R Winkel, FAIA, PE, CASp for his decades of outstanding service to the ICC and the national model code development process by naming him an ICC Honorary Member.

AIA national staff member Jessyca Henderson, AIA nominated Steve in July, and the ICC governmental voting membership ratified his nomination at its annual business meeting on October 17 at the 2016 ICC Annual Conference in Kansas City. As an Honorary Member, Steve is permitted to vote for the first time on code change proposals at the ICC Group B Public Comment Hearings this week that will determine the content of the 2018 editions of the ICC International Codes series.

Steve’s dedication to the principles of better codes and better code solutions has been tireless. Since attending his first code development hearing in 1984 (also his first representing the AIA), he has extensive experience with the model code development efforts from his days participating in code development for one of ICC’s predecessor organizations (ICBO) through the creation of the ICC in 1994. Steve was closely involved with the development of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) and serves as a member of the ICC Building Code Action Committee (BCAC).

Steve has over 45 years’ experience as an architect, engineer, landscape architect, and Certified Access Specialist with expertise in accessibility, project management, code analysis, and quality assurance reviews. He has co‐authored several illustrative and interpretive building code publications including Building Codes Illustrated (now in its fifth edition), Residential Codes Illustrated, Building Codes Illustrated for Healthcare Facilities, Building Codes Illustrated for Elementary and Secondary Schools, and their predecessor, Design Guide to the 1997 Uniform Building Code.

Steve is an AIA Fellow, served on the AIA Board of Directors, and is a past chair of the AIA Codes and Standards Committee. He was appointed in 2015 to his fourth 4-year term as the architect member of the California Building Standards Commission. Steve was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) for seven years. He currently chairs of the FEMA/NIBS Code Resource Support Committee, which reviews and comments on building code changes related to seismic safety.

Congratulations to Steve on this well-deserved recognition – and thank you for your decades of outstanding service to the AIA and the profession!
