Civic Engagement as an Emerging Professional - A Few Ideas for Self Starters

Meet Ashley Hand, Assoc. AIA -- The recently elected Mayor of Kansas City did something quite unusual when he opened up all of the city boards and commissions to public applicants. Typically reserved for political paybacks, this gave the city an entirely new pool of potential members to consider and is part of the mayor's strategy to create a sustainable civic leadership. Chicago Artists Month show women architects doing other things

Chicago architect Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “The mother art is architecture.” Out of this art are several offsprings of artistic expression that richly contribute to the vibrancy of communities. Architecture, along with its allied arts, feed off of each other’s creativity. The Chicago Women In Architecture (CWA) will showcase this multi-faceted artistry of its industry by way of a retrospective, Architects Doing Other Things (a.DOT).

 

School Reconstruction in Columbia - After the Floods

In 2010, more than 4,000,000 acres and 3,000,000 people in Columbia were affected by massive flooding as a result of the El Niño weather patterns.  More than 300,000 homes and countless schools were destroyed.  At more than $6.8 billion in overall damage, the country has not embarked on a massive rebuilding program that will include thousands of replacement school facilities.  Read the entire article.

China’s population is estimated at approaching 1. 4 billion people in 2011. Along with a growing aging population, a large rural to urban migration, and a growing economy - the needs and expectations for appropriate and accessible quality health and hospital facilities in China are skyrocketing. The Fall 2011 “Architecture for Health” Visiting Lecture Series will focus on China. Leading experts from China as well as others who have had significant experience in completing successful projects in China, will share their knowledge and expertise during this semester long series on most Wednesdays at 11:30 am in the Wright Gallery.  Download the schedule.
