Spring Conference

2015 AIA CAE Spring Conference

April 15 - 18, 2015 | Detroit

This spring, we examined the rebirth of Detroit and how it is being fueled by a consortium of 21st Century educational and business models that are quickly changing the “perception” of Detroit from economic wasteland to a viable alternative and opportunity for a new generation.  We also explored the connections between creative learning, knowledge spaces, history, and revitalization. At the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education 2015 Spring Conference, we looked at the lessons from the past that Detroit continues to provide, while at the same time looking to its future, as an unexpected model for the evolution of a new cultural, economic and educational urban environment. The AIA Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) is a large and active group of architects and allied professionals concerned with the quality and design of all types of educational, cultural, and recreational facilities. While a large portion of our members practice in the K-12 and post-secondary education markets, we look to serve the needs of those in the entire pre-K to 99 markets. CAE identifies national educational facility issues critical to architects and works to strengthen relationships with allied organizations, client groups, and the public. On behalf of CAE, we encourage all to participate in our international discourse by applying to serve on the 5-person advisory group.

Letter from the Chair
Letter from President and Chair Steve Shiver, FAIA

Welcome to 2015! Join us this year as we look at the connections between creative learning, knowledge spaces, history and revitalization. As the economy continues to slowly improve, there will be increasing opportunities to repurpose existing building stock in new and exciting ways. As we look forward to this year, it is also beneficial to know what the CAE has focused on over the last few years. In 2007 the CAE examined how sustainability has influenced how we design, culminating in the fall conference in Seattle, Redefining Sustainability: New Directions for Designing Our Future. In 2008 the fall conference in Helsinki addressed the impact of a global marketplace on design and pedagogy. As we saw the economy decline we transitioned to adapt and understand how these circumstance had an impact on our profession and educational facility design. Read More...

The American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education (AIA CAE) would like to encourage all members active in the design of environments for learning to consider participating in the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools award.  AIA CAE has worked closely with the U.S. Department of Education and dozens of education, health and environmental NGOs to help create and implement this award over the past three years.
