2013 Emerging Professional Component Grants
The College of Fellows has established a small grants fund to assist AIA components in the development of programs which foster the mission of Young Architects and Associates. These funds maybe used to enhance the activities of an existing Emerging Professionals group or as seed money to help start a new one. Because one of the goals of the component grants program is to make Emerging Professionals groups a vital component activity, an explanation or demonstration of component.
All grants must be for a specific program or activity of a local, state, or
regional Emerging Professionals group and should address at least one of the
following: advancement of the profession, career advancement, the value of
design, starting one's own firm, economy and change, and the value of
licensure. General component activities or programs are not eligible. Grants
for travel or meal reimbursements will also not be funded. All grants are made
to an AIA component. This year, there is a maximum limit of $5,000 for each
grant. Proposals with matching funds are encouraged.
The deadline to submit is July 8, 2013.

21st Century Learning Environments blur the boundary between fun, play, wonder and information access. Melding examples from the past and present, this webinar looks at playgrounds as valued cultural activity centers and unique destinations that challenge children's curiosity. Contrasting commodification of play with cultural specificity of place and architect/artist collaborations, we will look at changing perceptions of play and playgrounds from the 1950's to the present that concentrate on the importance of the art of play. Examples will be shared that present play destinations as cultural play scapes.

Mixed-income housing gained national attention and became a federal priority in 1993 when, with the authorization of the HOPE VI program, federal, local, and private programs began using mixed-income housing to encourage social mobility and avoid concentrating affordable housing in low-income neighborhoods.
Practitioners and academics will consider efforts required to build mixed-income communities, expectations for neighborhood change, technical issues including income mix percentages, shared amenities, and the physical design of market and affordable housing.

Project Work Planning - The Process Of Planning And Executing A Project

The purpose of this presentation is to present the process of project work planning and the elements of a good plan. All projects, large or small should have a project work plan and certain characteristics will be common across project size and scope. The use of the appropriate level and number of tasks in a plan is discussed and this may be different between Project Managers and project types. The approach is to simplify and produce project work plans that serve the project team, not to produce plans that must be served.
