AAJ Fall Conference

September 18-21, 2013 | Portland, Oregon

The American Institute of Architects' Academy of Architecture for Justice (AAJ) is pleased to announce its 2013 Fall Conference September 18-21, 2013 at the Portland Hilton Hotel in Portland, Oregon. The three-day conference is open to AIA and non-AIA members, all of those active in justice facilities including planners, architects, owners, public safety officials, officers and administrators, contractors and vendors.

The theme of this year's conference is the evolving prevalence of several forms of alternative project delivery as those processes have been applied to the justice building environments. Each version of these various methods has much to recommend it but each also inevitably entails certain challenges with the justice environments adding another level of complexity given the paramount issues of security and safety.

The goal of the annual AIA AAJ National Conference for 2013 is to provide a forum for open, vibrant, and provocative discussion of the "Best Practices" in project delivery across the total spectrum of owners, design professionals, contractors, vendors, operators, and financiers, active within the criminal justice building community. Come, listen, learn, and participate!

COD Fall Conference

September 22-28 | Berlin, Germany - with Potsdam add-on through September 28

The beginnings of Modernism in Germany have roots in the Jugendstil (German  Art Nouveau) of the end of the 19th Century. In 1907, the foundation of the Werkbund gave architects Hermann Muthesius, Henry van der Velde, Peter Behrens and Walter Gropius a common forum.  Fagus Factory in Alfeld, built in 1911-16 by Gropius, showed a new direction for architecture.

Central to the development, teaching and dissemination of modern architecture was the School of Bauhaus founded in Weimar, in 1919 under the leadership of Walter Gropius. The Bauhaus manifesto proclaimed, that "the ultimate aim of all visual arts is the complete building".

The Committee of Design Berlin Conference is designed to examine and learn this advancement and contribution to world architecture. We'll visit buildings and study the legacy of early German Modernism and a continuity of new work built in the capital since the reunification of Germany. City districts have changed appearance and composition, many buildings have been restored, rebuilt or erected – a great change has taken place.  While Berlin architecture is the focus, the conferees will also travel to Dessau and Potsdam.

FOREFRONT:Architects as Collaborative Leaders

October 24-25, 2013 | Salt Lake City, Utah

This conference posits that architects need new skill sets in addition to new technologies to reclaim their role as leaders in the enterprise of designing and constructing our built environment. If architects are to operate successfully and efficiently within the increasingly complex and fast-paced design development process, they need to harness the potential of emerging technologies. If they are to synthesize and coordinate the multi-faceted design and construction process, architects need to create a framework for inclusive discussions within these collaborative teams. If they are to be respected as leaders, architects need to communicate with their collaborators as equal partners in design. In short, architects must learn to lead integrated and collaborative teams.

FOREFRONT is a conference jointly sponsored by the AIA Center for Integrated Practice – a nexus of the AIA Technology in Architectural Practice and Project Delivery Knowledge Communities – AIA Utah, and the University of Utah College of Architecture + Planning and is in partnership with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA).
