    I run the archtiecture blog www.talkitect.com and am interested in talking about blogging issues with other designers who also spend their free time dedicated to writing, blogging and utilizing social media. I want to know what you have done that has worked, what mistakes were made, how to grow readership, how to earn money from a blog, how a blog has possibly attracted new clients, and any other relevant topic.

    The first question that you should ask yourself is how your design blog differs from other architecture and design blogs that already exist.  What does your blog offer that a reader cannot receive somewhere else?  Once you can define yourself and who you are, you can separate yourself from the others.  Google "architecture blog" and you will receive 426,000,000 results.  What makes your 1 different from those?

    Although it sounds like an internet marketing 101 question, some practical wisdom may apply to the initial approach, as in "how" it shows up in the search engine result of 426,000,000 that Christopher Gerrity mentioned. Expert consultants like Eric Bobro, who specialize in internet marketing for the design profession, may be a worthy investment to get you on the right track on many of the topics you mentioned. The blog I frequent (http://thedesignatedsketcher.com) does a great job of promoting itself through industry events, grassroots competitions, and involvement with a university. From that alone, it appears that a degree of tactile promotion may serve you well, especially if you're trying to target a niche market or a subcategory of architecture. Also, the novelty of making an appeal to people's opinions, as being an important component of your blog, creates an allure that appears to be embedded in your blog's title. That being said, I think I'll take a look at your blog-now that's clever marketing.

    I have also been involved in the Designated Sketcher as a guest critic, and I've tried to cross promote that blog and my own. I agree that tactile promotion is a valuable way to grow readership - and something I've been trying to do more of. Unfortunately it is difficult to make the time as I also work full time at an architecture firm. But I do as much as my schedule allows.

    It would be great to get some comments from other bloggers - Bob Borsen from life of an architect or the team at Build...
