  • 1.  Ph.D. Pilot Study on School Security

    Dear fellow AIA members,

I am currently earning a Ph.D. in architecture at Penn State University.  My research involves the security performance of learning spaces.  I am conducting a pilot study designed to direct my final research towards identifying the most important security issues confronting architects who are involved in the design of small learning communities and how these issues may be addressed.  This pilot study consists of 3 to 5 questions and should take only about two minutes or less to complete.  If you design schools (small learning communities or traditional), please consider taking this survey.  Your participation would be highly valued and helpful.  Thank you so much.

    Hi Mike,
I just took your survey. You might want to consider defining "small learning community" for us. I have no security concerns in designing those, and consider small learning communities to be a part of a comprehensive strategy for designing safe schools. However, I suspect I may be misinterpreting your question, or assigning a definition to that term that you did not intend.
    Best,

    Ann,
Thank you for pointing this out.  There are a few iterations of small learning communities, but generally speaking they can be defined as follows:

Small learning communities (SLCs) can be generally defined as large, often open-classroom spaces that serve up to 150 students.  These students can gather in groups of 20 to 30 for lecture-based learning or into smaller groups for seminar or group project learning.  Students can also work individually in spaces designed for quiet learning and reflection.  SLCs are designed for flexibility in learning modalities and spatial arrangements as partitions and/or furniture are able to be rearranged to suit the needs of learning.  SLCs are typically served by a team of 8-10 teachers who can work collaboratively or individually to suit the needs of students.

I hope this helps clarify things.
